Chicoutimi Saguenéens’ Étienne Brodeur tops Tuesday’s 3 Stars with overtime winner

No. 1 star: Étienne Brodeur, Chicoutimi Saguenéens (QMJHL)

The overage winger and the Saguenéens played desperate to pull off a 5-4 overtime win over the Saint John Sea Dogs, with Brodeur tipping in the winner 7:26 into overtime to hand the defending MasterCard Memorial Cup championship their first post-season loss. The former 50-goal scorer for the Lewiston Maineiacs, who celebrated his goal by doing the worm near centre ice — someone whose old team is defunct is surely entitled to bring da funk — had three points in the win.

Brodeur (1G-2A, +3), fellow overage Christian Ouellet (three assists, +4) and Ottawa Senators prospect Jean-Gabriel Pageau (2G-1A, +4) were the primary reasons Chicoutimi was able to cut Saint John's series lead to 2-1. Ouellet (three assists, +4) made a great pass that sprung Pageau (2G-1A, +4) for Chicoutimi's second goal. The trio also tied the game just 15 seconds after Saint John had taken its first lead, with Ouellet making a lead pass that Brodeur one-touched to a driving Pageau, who went in to score.

The Sags needed another comeback to get into overtime, with ex-Sea Dog Gabriel Bourret ripping home the equalizer with 2:33 left, just 44 seconds after Saint John had taken the lead. In overtime, Ouellet fired a tip-friendly wrist shot that Brodeur got his stick on to redirect past Mathieu Corbeil.

No. 2 star: Laurent Brossoit, Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL)

The Calgary Flames draft pick shut down the Moose Jaw Warriors again, stopping 30-of-32 shots in the Oil Kings' 3-2 win that opened a 3-0 lead in the Dub's Eastern Conference final. (What's that, 22 wins in a row?) The Warriors, feeding off a pumped-up home crowd, tested Brossoit often, outshooting Edmonton for the second consecutive game. But the 19-year-old Calgary Flames pick seldom gave Moose Jaw an opening, controlling rebounds and helping Edmonton protect a one-goal lead over the final 4 1/2 minutes.

"I'm just keeping it simple, not changing a thing from regular season," Brossoit told Moose Jaw's Country 100.7. "It's just a matter of keeping things simple and watching the puck."

Allowing two goals meant Brossoit's playoff goals-against average actually went up. The Surrey, B.C., native has a 1.45 average and .949 save percentage in the second season.

No. 3 star: Olli Määttä, London Knights (OHL)

The leading defenceman scorer in the Ontario league playoffs scored two goals in 22 seconds in the middle period, helping London beat the Kitchener Rangers 5-2 to take a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference final. Määttä put the Knights up by two with a top-corner rocket through traffic from just inside the blueline. Moments later, he one-timed a feed from Nashville Predators prospect Austin Watson into the net to put the Knights well out in front at 4-1. That sent Kitchener goalie John Gibson, who had already been lifted once, to the bench for the rest of the evening.

Honourable mention: Nathan MacKinnon, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

MacKinnon (two assists) and Jonathan Drouin (1G-1A) each had multi-point nights to help the Mooseheads take another must-win game by winning 4-3 at Rimouski to pare the Océanic's series lead to 2-1. MacKinnon wasted little time helping Halifax get its road legs, assisting on first-period goals by Brendan Duke and Drouin, who got his ninth of the playoffs. Drouin also fed Martin Frk for the decisive goal with 82 seconds left in the second period.
