Oshawa Generals’ Scott Laughton has his hand in every goal in rivalry game win: Sunday’s 3 stars

No. 1 star: Scott Laughton, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

The Generals won their fourth in a row with a big effort from their interim captain. Laughton, wearing the C while Josh Brown served a suspension, showed the Generals the way on Sunday, bagging two goals and three assists in Oshawa’s 5-3 win over the Peterborough Petes.

Laughton drew first blood for Oshawa, with help from Michael Dal Colle and Daniel Robertson. He then assisted on Chris Carlisle’s goal to end the frame up 2-0.

The Petes stormed back and tied the game, but Laughton assisted on Dal Colle’s winner with just over three to go in the third, and then sealed the deal with an empty netter in the final minute to ice the five-point night.

It was winning streak versus losing streak, and the streaks continued with the Oshawa win and Petes loss. The Petes fell to 7-9-0-1, dropping their fourth in a row. The win puts the Generals into a tie for second place overall in the OHL with 27 points. They improve to 13-3-0-1 on the year.

Daniel Altshauser got the win in net, stopping 37 shots, while Andrew D’Agostini took the loss, making 16 saves.

No. 2 star: Anthony DeLuca, Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL)

DeLuca had another big night for the Oceanic, who won to salvage the weekend. DeLuca scored three times, including the winner, and added an assist to give Rimouski a 7-4 win over the Victoriaville Tigres.

DeLuca has taken a step forward this year, his second in the league. Three goals gives DeLuca 18 on the year in 20 games, a near goal-a-game pace. It was his fifth multi-goal game this year. He scored 22 goals all of last season. He’s in second place in scoring and in goals, trailing Anthony Mantha on both counts.

Jan Kostalek and Alexis Loiseau added four assists each in the win, which improved Rimouski to 10-6-1-3 on the year. Carl-Antoine Delisle had three assists in the loss, as Victo dropped to 9-9-1-0. The Oceanic were 4-for-7 on the powerplay. Philippe Desrosiers took the win, while Brandon Whitney was pulled in the loss, with Charles-Olivier Lajoie splitting the time.

No. 3 star: Jayce Howryluk, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

Howryluk scored three times and added a helper in Brandon’s 6-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. He scored creeping out of the penalty box to put Brandon ahead early in the first period to open the scoring, and then put Brandon ahead 4-1 and 6-2 with goals to seal the deal. He had a goal in each period in the win.

The hatty was Howryluk’s second in as many games, as he also put up an identical 3+1=4 statline against Everett on Friday night. Howryluk tripled his goal total this weekend, going from three goals to nine. He scored 18 goals in his rookie year last year.

Brandon improved to 9-9-0-0 on the year, while Lethbridge falls to a league-low 2-13-1-2. Richard Nejezchleb scored twice and John Quenneville had a goal and two assists in the win. Jordan Papirny earned the win in net, while Corbin Boes took the loss.

Honourable mention: Alexandre Ranger, Baie-Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL)

Ranger had the best of a number of big nights for the Drakkar Sunday in their 9-2 win over the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. Ranger had a hat trick and an assist in the win.Dominic Poulin and Valentin Zykov also had four points in the win, theirs of the one goal, three assist variety. Nicolas Meloche and Denis Gorbunov each added two assists.

The win will hopefully calm coach Eric Veilleux down, as he was put on indefinite suspension after freaking-the-heck-out in Friday’s shootout win over the Oceanic. Veilleux threw eight sticks on the ice to protest a referee’s call, and has earned a much-needed vacation.

The win ran Baie-Comeau’s undefeated streak to 10 games.

Potent notables: Captain Matt Finn scored the winner in Guelph’s 3-1 comeback win over Sudbury. Zack Mitchell and Hunter Garlent each had a goal and an assist. The Storm extend their winning streak to 10 games. … Andrew Goldberg had two goals and an assist in Mississauga’s 4-1 win over Kitchener. … Georgs Golovkovs had a goal and two assists, including assisting the winner, in Drummondville’s 4-3 OT win over Blainville-Boisbriand. … Brett Welychka and Canucks’ first rounder Bo Horvat each had a goal and two assists in London’s 6-2 win over Erie. The Otters had an 11-game winning streak snapped. … JC Campagna had a goal and three assists in Moncton’s bounce-back 6-2 win over Charlottetown. The Islanders have now lost their last seven games. The Wildcats went 5-for-7 with the man-advantage. … Boston Leier scored twice, including the winner, in Regina’s 3-1 win over Moose Jaw. … Curtis Lazar scored the winner in the mini-battle of Alberta, with the Oil Kings prevailing over the Hitmen 4-2. Captain Jaynen Risling had a goal and an assist in the loss. … Parker Bowles had three assists in Tri-City’s 4-2 win over Kootenay. Connor Rankin added two apples, and Brian Williams had a goal and an assist.
