Cadorette, Baie-Comeau Drakkar blank Anthony Mantha: Friday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Philippe Cadorette, Baie-Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL)

Membership in the 'My Team Held Anthony Mantha Scoreless & All I Got Was A Buzzing The Net Stick Tap' club doubled on Friday, from one to two. Cadorette kicked out 47-of-48 shots, including all 20 he faced in the opening 20 and helped Baie-Comeau vex the Val-d'Or Foreurs in a tilt between President's Cup contenders.

Cadorette, who won Baie-Comeau's starting job at the ripe old age of 17 last season, was dialled in from the opening puck drop. The Foreurs were credited with 19 'dangerous shots' over the course of the evening, yet could coax only one puck into the net. Meantime, defensive forward Alec Jon Banville (3G, +3) stepped out of character to get his first QMJHL hat trick after scoring just once in his first 25 games this season.

Mantha (-3, four SOG) saw his 23-game point streak end. His last goose egg came on Oct. 17 against Charlottetown and Toronto Maple Leafs-drafted goalie Antoine Bibeau, who is now Mantha's teammate on the Foreurs. Bibeau was struck in the neck by a shot on Friday and later left the game after Baie-Comeau put it out of reach.

No. 2 star: Coleman Vollrath, Victoria Royals (OHL)

Vollrath and the Royals beat the Portland Winterhawks for the second time in seven days, prevailing 3-2 in a shootout after the goalie made 38 saves and turned aside all three attempts during the circus. Make it two in a row for the league's stingiest team over its highest-scoring team. It's the third time this season Vollrath has beaten the Dub's defending champs.

The 18-year-old Calgarian, as the backup to Patrik Polivka, leads the WHL with a 1.98 average and .941 save percentage. Friday, Vollrath and Winterhawks newcomer Corbin Boes (31 saves on 33 shots) traded spectacular saves for 65 enthralling minutes. Vollrath came up big during the middle portion of the second period to keep Portland from pulling out to a sizable lead. The Winterhawks led 2-1 after 40 with Brendan Leipsic, Nic Petan and Derrick Pouliot each factoring into both goals, but the Royals' Steven Hodges scored with 13:18 left to force overtime.

Leipsic attempted a Forsberg move in the opening round of the shootout, but Vollrath came up with the save. Seventeen-year-old Jack Walker beat Boes in the next round before Vollrath nailed down the win by waiting out multiple dekes by Petan and making the clinching save.

No. 3 star: Sam Bennett, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)

In a toss-up between 17-year-olds who are tearing it up of late, Bennett (1G-2A, +2 in a 9-4 win over Oshawa) gets the slight edge over the Niagara IceDogs' Brendan Perlini (3G in a 6-5 OT win at Kitchener). Spearheading a nine-goal outburst against a conference-leading team tops a power-play hat trick in a game between ninth-place teams.

Kingston sent a message, or at least caught Oshawa off-guard in its first outing since Scott Laughton's return from Team Canada and its load-up additions of overages Dylan Smoskowitz and Alex Lepkowski. Bennett and linemates Sam Schutt (1G-2A, +2) and Spencer Watson (1G-1A, +2) scored on the game's first shift, 14 seconds into the game. Kingston ended up scoring on its four of its first six shots, with Bennett also setting up a Watson goal during that opening onslaught.

The Generals actually got back on even terms by the game's midpoint before Bennett set up Schutt for the 5-4 goal. Kingston's second liners, Corey Pawley (1G-3A, +2), Darcy Greenaway (2G-2A, +2) and Robert Polesello (2G-1A, +2), also came up big. The final margin was all the more impressive considering Kingston played two skaters short, with all three of their NHL draft picks sitting out.

Honourable mention: Aspen Sterzer, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

Sterzer (1G-2A, +2) said an emotional goodbye to Kamloops after being traded at the deadline, then promptly contributed three points during Red Deer's 4-3 win at Moose Jaw. The winger scored his first Rebels goal just 3:57 into the contest and got a helper when captain Connor Bleackley (2G, +2) scored exactly three minutes later. Sterzer also assisted on Bleackley's eventual game-winner.

Sterzer has forged on with high-level hockey despite the strain of his mother, Franci, being paralyzed from a 2006 car crash.

"I just want to keep going with my career and, yeah, it’s tough with what’s going on with my mom, but I know my mom would want me to pursue my dreams and see those come true," Sterzer recently told Kamloops This Week.

Honourable mention: Anthony Brodeur, Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)

Brodeur set an Olympiques team record by increasing his shutout streak to 194 minutes 28 seconds before Samuel Blais' third-period power-play tally gave the Victoriaville Tigres a 1-0 win. The New Jersey Devils seventh-rounder did his utmost to hold off Victo, stopping 33-of-34 shots. The son of Martin Brodeur now has a 2.72 average and .895 save percentage, an improvement on the 3.31/8.73 slash line he boasted on New Year's Day.

St. Louis Blues pick François Tremblay made 35 saves to get his first shutout for the Tigres.

Honourable mention: Brendan Perlini, Niagara IceDogs (OHL)

As noted, Perlini had his second OHL hat trick to help the IceDogs pull out an overtime win in Kitchener. The NHL draft prospect scored late in the first to cut into an early 2-0 Rangers lead. Kitchener stretched out to a 4-1 edge, but Niagara scored thrice in the first 10 minutes of the third to go ahead, with Perlini twice finishing after setups orchestrated in part by Toronto Maple Leafs pick Carter Verhaeghe (3A).

Perlini has 60 points, seventh in OHL scoring but fourth among draft-year players. Buffalo Sabres second-rounder Justin Bailey equalized for Kitchener to force overtime. The IceDogs got the full two points when Aleksandar Mikulovich blasted a slapshot into a top corner with 1:14 left in OT. The win pulled the OHL's youngest team move into a tie for the last playoff position in its conference.
