As an overage and former NHL draft pick, Joseph Blandisi is a compelling character to watch in the Ontario Hockey League since he is trying to get a foothold someplace constituting the next level. The 20-year-old has been tearing it up since rejoining the Barrie Colts, with 21 points in 10 games to lead all players who are not Connor McDavid, Dylan Strome, or on the power play with that terrific tandem.

It's fair to say, though, that Blandisi's best work was his short-handed strike Saturday in the Colts' win over the Windsor Spitfires, where he put the puck behind his back to play keepaway from defenceman Andrew Burns, then cut across the goal to tuck the puck home.

Burns, indeed. On both the defenceman and the goalie.

Blandisi played for the Buffalo Sabres entry at the Traverse City prospect tournament in September after becoming a free agent when the Colorado Avalanche let the draft rights to him expire on June 1. He's evidently on a mission, with lost time to make up for after missing more than 20 games last season due to an injury. Blandisi was also moved at midseason in each of the past two years, going from Owen Sound to Ottawa to Barrie, which is not something that should derail a player's progress but certainly can affect him. That all contributed to him returning to the league as a 20-year-old, and he's been a treat to watch while skating alongside Sabres second-rounder Brendan Lemieux. It wouldn't be a surprise if a team looking to fill up its prospect pantry takes a chance on signing him for next season.
