Washington RB sets two state rushing records in final career game, then has one broken just minutes later

It wasn't enough that Blaine (Wash.) High senior running back Mario Gobbato was on the verge of setting a new state single season rushing record. Instead, he decided to do it with style, setting another state record in the process.

As reported by the Seattle Times, Bellingham Herald and a handful of other outlets, Gobbato ran for a state-record 480 yards in Blaine's 50-20 win against Bothell (Wash.) Cedar Park Christian School.

That 480 yard total pushed Gobbato's career total to 2,821 yards, exactly 140 more than the previous state career record holder, Jordan Todd of Interlake (Wash.) High, who set the record in 2011.

Gobbato's single-season mark pushed his career total to an impressive 5,948 yards. As it stands, Gobbato won't get a chance to increase those totals, with Blaine shut out of the state playoffs despite a 7-4 record.

"We didn't want to come up short again," Gobbato told the Bellingham Herald. "It was a good way to go out. I am definitely going to miss it."

Yet Gobbato's single-game record was incredibly short lived. On the same night, Yakima (Wash.) Eisenhower High running back Branden Curtis ran for 481 yards, exactly one yard more than Gobbato compiled the same evening.

Incredibly, Gobbato's junior season total of 2,669 yards ranks third on the single-season list, leaving the Blaine star with two of the top three season totals on the state's record list.

Now, he'll look for opportunities on the next level with two state records in his back pocket, and that's no small accomplishment to rest on.
