Third H.S. cancels end of football season over hazing allegations

A high school in upstate New York has canceled the last game of the football season, citing reports of hazing. According to the Times Herald-Record,

The district became aware of the hazing allegations, which were sexual in nature, on Monday. Eldred immediately launched a probe into the misconduct, which revealed that over a three-week period, some players pushed their genitals into the face of others while on school grounds.

The Associated Press also reported that the allegations included sitting on other players' faces.

"While these acts did not result in any physical harm, they were not harmless in intent. Hazing is not acceptable, will not be tolerated and will be dealt with severely by the district," Eldred Central School District Superintendent Robert Dufour told the paper.

The Times Herald-Record added that this is the second school in that area of New York to cancel the remainder of its season.

Monroe-Woodbury canceled the remaining two jayvee football games of its season on Oct. 17 because of alleged bullying incidents in the form of racial slurs and homophobic comments made by players and directed toward teammates. Monroe-Woodbury interim Superintendent Elsie Rodriguez and Town of Woodbury police continue to investigate the alleged hazing.

Eldred is also the third high school in the country to cancel the season over allegations of hazing, following the lead of Sayreville (N.J.) War Memorial High School and Central Bucks County West (Pa.) High School. In Oklahoma, a school expelled four players and asked the coach to resign over alleged hazing in the locker room.

In soccer, the coaches of one team resigned after their players bullied a player on the opposing team during a game, and another coach was suspended after members of the team bullied a teammate who has autism.
