Teen shot and killed following Jabari Parker’s latest game

Following a game between two of Chicago's top high school basketball teams, a 17-year-old Morgan Park High honors student was shot and killed outside the Chicago State University gymnasium, according to a Chicago Tribune staff report.

Led by reigning Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year Jabari Parker, Rivals.com's No. 2 overall recruit in the Class of 2013, Simeon Career Academy had just escaped with a 53-51 victory against rival Morgan Park when an argument broke out in the crowd as the two rivals exchanged postgame handshakes, the report said.

The confrontation carried into the parking lot, where 17-year-old Morgan Park honors student Tyrone Lawson was shot and killed. After a heads up from campus police, Chicago officers pulled over a Jeep near the university, discovered a gun inside and took two people into custody, officials told the Tribune.

At the end of the Tribune's video footage, Simeon coaches can be seen in the corner of the gym protecting a calm Parker, who recently announced his commitment to Duke. The teams remained in their respective locker rooms "longer than normal," according to the Tribune.

YouTube user Amazinq7 also posted this disturbing footage of threats made towards a Simeon player:

"(Chicago Public Schools) periodically uses the university’s athletic facility to provide a neutral setting for student sporting events," a CSU statement read. "This is the first such incident to occur on the campus of Chicago State University where CPS students have played many times over the last three years.

"Additional security is provided by the university and all external partners during high school sporting events. Arrests have been made and university officials are awaiting the outcome of a full investigation to learn details about the shooting incident."

The news becomes even more disheartening with the knowledge that former Simeon star Benji Wilson, the nation's top recruit in 1984, was shot and killed as a high school senior while walking along Vincennes Avenue, the same street that separates the two schools involved in Wednesday's melee by 30 blocks on Chicago's South Side.

Wilson's story was chronicled by ESPN in a 30 for 30 documentary entitled "Benji." Parker wears No. 25 to honor Wilson.
