Jose Canseco scheduled to discuss 'training the natural way' at Character Combine

On its website, the Character Combine describes itself as "a one-day event that assesses, develops, and celebrates character in college, high school, and youth sports." And for their 10th interactive conference at Folsom (Calif.) High, the Sacramento-based organization has chosen Jose Canseco as a speaker.

Canseco will conduct two sessions at the combine, which is estimated to host more than 800 coaches and athletes from youth sports to the college level, according to The Sacramento Bee. His first session will address "conditioning and training the natural way" and the second will cover the "art of power hitting."

Of course, Canseco is the 1988 American League MVP and author of "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big," a tell-all book in which he admits to using anabolic steroids. If that seems to contradict everything that the Character Combine stands for, it's because it does.

“He’s a powerful voice. He speaks on anti-doping with agencies all over, and he’s testified in front of (congressional) committees on PEDs," Character Combine founder and executive director Jason Harper told the Bee. "What better voice to talk to our coaches and athletes of what not to do to your body?”

Still, Canseco once lauded the benefits of performance-enhancing drugs during a "60 Minutes" episode in 2005, although he has backtracked on that sentiment in recent years. Likewise, as the New York Daily News notes, he referred to women as both "road beef" and "slump busters" in his books.

Canseco's financial and legal issues since concluding his Major League Baseball career with 462 home runs in 2001 have been well documented, but apparently he's still finding a way to capitalize on his steroid use.
