Boston guard drills ‘Basketball shot heard round the world,’ wins game with 80-footer

No sooner than Prep Rally promotes one ridiculously deep shot than another, even more dramatic bucket comes through for another high school basketball team. This time, it was a Boston buzzer-beater, with East Boston (Mass.) High's Pat Santos taking advantage of a missed free throw to net a 43-42 victory against Boston (Mass.) Madison Park High.

“We’ve always got to have faith,” Santos told the Boston Herald of his shot. “If there’s one second left you’ve just got to shoot the basketball. . . . This is my wildest game right here. This is the wildest game I’ve ever been a part of.”

The miracle heave capped a wild rally in which East Boston tied the game with 12 seconds remaining, then seemingly gave Madison Park a chance to win by fouling a shooter from behind the 3-point arc just before the buzzer.

As documented by the Herald in both print and video form, Madison Park shooter Johnny Bowden hit the first two of his three free throws. Fatefully, he missed the third.

The rest, as they say, is history. As Santos notes below, he seemed to know that fate was on his side.

“As soon as I touched it I just threw it. It felt real good. Real, real, real good.”
