After several months of speculation, the Sayreville (N.J.) school district announced early Thursday morning that veteran coach George Najjar will not be back next season. Najjar's team caught national attention in October when seven players were arrested for criminal charges related to hazing and sexual assault in the locker room.

"Today we took the next important step toward the 2015 football season," Sayreville Schools Superintendent Rick Labbe told MyCentralJersey.com. "We are excited to launch a comprehensive search to find the next leader of our football program."

A member of the New Jersey Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Najjar had coached Sayreville to 20 consecutive state playoff appearances, going 165-54 in his career there, before Labbe cut short the 2014 season due to the allegations. The school had won the last three state titles. Before starting in Sayreville, he coached in Brooklyn, N.Y., compiling a 94-32-1 record.

Also a tenured physical education teacher at the school, Najjar has been suspended with pay since Oct. 16. Four assistant coaches were also suspended, but they were reinstated on Nov. 16. Labbe did not comment on their status.

More than 1,100 people signed a petition supporting Najjar, according to MyCentralJersey.com. They presented their comments to the board of education in November. Najjar has denied interview requests throughout.

After the allegations came to light in Sayreville, schools in Pennsylvania and New York also cancelled their seasons due to hazing and a school in Oklahoma expelled four football players amid hazing allegations.
