USWNT gets call from President Obama congratulating them on World Cup win

The United States women’s national team got the call of a lifetime Tuesday when President Obama reached out to congratulate the team on winning the World Cup.

The conversation was awkward as the President tried to make jokes and call out players by name. It was obvious he was reading off a fact sheet some White House lackey prepared for him 10 minutes earlier.

But that’s probably how a lot of calls go with the President, right? You’re not exactly buddies so the chitchat is forced and you feel obligated to laugh at his comments even if they’re not funny because he’s the leader of the free world. And then you end up inviting him to like, your parents’ barbecue because, hey, he’d probably like that and your dad grills a mean stuffed burger.

He probably gets that a lot.

Anyway, the USWNT will get to relive this awkward moment in person. At the end of the call, the President invited the whole team to his place to congratulate them in person.

Good on the President for taking time out of his day to make the call. It’s definitely a rare opportunity for a President to congratulate an American team on winning the World Cup, so it will no doubt make the highlight list of his entire tenure.
