Mostly NFL Notes: Talking Manning brothers, Devonta Freeman and a look around the league

Eli Manning completed 75.9 percent of his passes and got 8.2 YPA while throwing for 441 yards and three touchdowns Sunday. He set a career high in pass attempts (54) with his final throw of the night, which was a game-winning TD strike to Larry Donnell that completed an 82-yard drive that took all of 1:24 with Odell Beckham Jr. and Rueben Randle on the sidelines for the vast majority of it. Manning has averaged 306.0 passing yards with a 10:2 TD:INT ratio over his last four games (despite the Giants “leading” the NFL in drops), taking just three sacks over that span. With an upcoming schedule (@Phi, Dal, @N.O.) that should feature a bunch of shootouts, Manning is locked in as a weekly QB1, assuming ODB’s hamstring injury isn’t serious.

Someone who’s no longer a weekly QB1, however, is Eli’s brother Peyton, who sure looks close to done. His 6.5 YPA is his lowest since his rookie season (in 1998), and he now has more interceptions than TD passes this year. In fact, the 39-year-old has been picked off in every game this season, marking the first time he’s thrown an interception in five straight games since 2007. The arm strength is simply no longer there. Eli has officially passed Peyton as the superior fantasy option for the first time...Whether it be for ball security or health reasons, Latavius Murray has effectively been benched for the second half in each of the past two games...The Broncos have won an NFL-record 14 straight divisional road games...Demaryius Thomas is on pace to finish with 186 targets and three touchdowns.

The biggest injury news of the day was what seems to be the season-ending loss of Jamaal Charles, who apparently suffered a torn ACL. What a devastating blow to his owners, as Charles was one of only a handful of truly valuable fantasy backs these days. One of my favorite players in the league to watch, Charles will be entering his age 30 season coming off major knee surgery next year...The Chiefs were coming off three straight tough losses to teams now a combined 15-0 and were finally back at home against a Bears squad missing Alshon Jeffery and Eddie Royal. K.C. proceeded to go scoreless in the second half, ceding two touchdowns in the final 3:11 en route to ending many Survivor entries.

Devonta Freeman is ridiculous. He’s totaled 539 yards with seven touchdowns over the last three games, a span in which he’s also secured 17-of-19 targets. If a draft were held today, the only player I’d even consider taking ahead of him would be Le’Veon Bell. Washington entered Sunday’s game having allowed the fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs this season...The Falcons have scored 73 points over the last two games despite Matt Ryan posting a 1:3 TD:TO ratio...Alfred Morris and Matt Jones combined for 35 rushing yards on 19 attempts against an Atlanta front seven that came in surrendering the most fantasy points to opposing RBs this year.

Buffalo somehow won a road game without winning the turnover battle and its quarterback throwing for 109 yards and its running backs getting 2.7 YPC...Percy Harvin can be safely dropped in all leagues if he wasn’t already...Tyrod Taylor and Marcus Mariota combined for 123 rushing yards on 13 carries. Everyone else in this game combined for 101 yards on 43 rushing attempts.

Baltimore entered having allowed eight catches for 31 yards and zero scores to tight ends over four games this season. Gary Barnidge proceeded to then go off for eight receptions and 139 yards with a highlight worthy TD catch for the second straight week. He already has more yards over five games than any of his previous four seasons in the league and has matched his career total for touchdowns with three. Barnidge is locked in as a borderline top-five fantasy tight end...Travis Benjamin had four touchdowns over the first two games of the year, but I’m even more encouraged about his fantasy value over his three games since when he’s scored just once. He’s been targeted 32 times over that span and has emerged as the No. 1 option in a suddenly potent passing attack...After shredding an overwhelmed Ravens secondary for 457 passing yards, Josh McCown has averaged 384.7 passing yards over the past three games, when he’s posted a 6:1 TD:INT ratio (adding a rushing score as well). McCown has done this with a bunch of no-name receivers, as he’s been one of the biggest fantasy surprises of the season.

Aaron Rodgers’ interception-free streak at home came to an end, but the Green Bay defense continues to play much better than most expected...This James Jones TD catch-and-run was nice...I called Eddie Lacy a buy-low target a couple of weeks back, but it’s hard not to be worried about him at this point. I’d much prefer to own Todd Gurley, but I don’t think that’s particularly close or controversial. Gurley, who’s played essentially just two games, is tied for the NFL-lead in 20+ yard (five) and 40+ yard (two) carries.

Doug Martin had a huge game, totaling 158 yards and three touchdowns against a Jacksonville defense that entered tied for having allowed the fewest YPC (3.1) on the year. He’s now eclipsed 100 rushing yards in back-to-back games and has secured all 11 of his targets this season. Martin is suddenly on pace to finish with 1,597 total yards and 13 touchdowns (and that’s with him ceding more than 50 touches to backup Charles Sims)...The Jaguars are 1-4, but they are quietly providing solid-to-strong fantasy options at QB, RB and two wide receivers (and likely at TE now with Julius Thomas back). Barring injury, that doesn’t figure to change moving forward.

What a game in Cincinnati, where the Bengals somehow won despite entering the fourth quarter down 24-7. This sick catch by Tyler Eifert certainly helped...Jeremy Hill is on pace to finish with 16 touchdowns and 608 yards from scrimmage. It’s hard to bench him in such a weak RB landscape, but Hill is no more than a low-end RB2 right now...We all expected Jimmy Graham’s numbers to decline in Seattle’s run-heavy offense, but it’s bizarre just how little they’ve utilized him...It sounds like Marshawn Lynch will be back soon, but Thomas Rawls should be viewed as a top-10 fantasy back for any game in which Lynch misses. The rookie recorded the Seahawks’ first rushing TD of the season in style.

The Eagles’ first quarter offensive struggles continued, and it took less than 16 minutes for Sam Bradford to become the first quarterback to throw two interceptions in the red zone in the same game this season. Of course, Philly scored 39 points over the final three quarters in an easy win over a New Orleans team that looks like one of the worst in football...Jordan Matthews and Brandin Cooks were two of my favorite wide receivers to target in drafts this year, and they’ve disappointed to say the least, although the latter salvaged his day with his first touchdown catch of the season on the final play of the game Sunday...An encouraging game from DeMarco Murray, but it’s worth noting his next three weeks include NYG, @Car and a bye, so further headaches may be in store in the short term.

Song of the Week: EL VY – Paul Is Alive

The Cardinals have scored the seventh-most points (190) through five games in NFL history...After Bruce Arians went out of his way to say David Johnson would take a backseat to Chris Johnson and the returning Andre Ellington, it was surprising to see the fumble-prone rookie punch in two scores from inside the five...The Lions committed six turnovers, as Ameer Abdullah lost another fumble and was lucky a second one was overturned...There are few players who’ve been worse than Matthew Stafford this season, certainly none at the quarterback position...Down 35-7 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Jim Caldwell inexplicably called for a field goal attempt. The Stafford/Caldwell combo is truly second to none.

Longread of the Week: A Criminal Mind

Running backs totaled 21 receptions in the Patriots/Cowboys game, as Darren McFadden is now fantasy relevant taking over Lance Dunbar’s role...Meanwhile, Dion Lewis has become everything New England hoped Shane Vereen would be and then some. Lewis won’t get more than 7-10 carries a game with LeGarrette Blount around, but he’s scored in three straight games and is on pace to record 92 catches while totaling 1,672 yards. Lewis is capable of doing things like this. Tied to the Patriots offense, he’s easily a top-10 fantasy back, even in non-PPR formats.
