Daily Dime: Dodgers bats and a house of Cards

Daily Dime: Dodgers bats and a house of Cards

We're looking at a light Thursday schedule, loaded with early starts. Let's get to it. As always, we caution you to review the weather reports and check MLB lineups before committing to names.

Kolten Wong, 2B, at Cin (Lorenzen), $15: St. Louis is facing Cincinnati starter Michael Lorenzen, a less-than-overpowering right-hander (1.58 WHIP). Lorenzen has been absolutely mauled by left-handed batters thus far. For details, I'll yield the floor to our friends at Inside Edge (@InsideEdgeScout on Twitter):

Michael Lorenzen has allowed an OBP of .522 versus LHB over the past 30 days. (MLB Rank: 126th of 126 qualified SP)

OH, YOU DON'T SAY?

Jason Heyward, OF, at Cin (Lorenzen), $17: Here's another Lorenzen nugget:

LHBs are hitting 14-for-35 (.400) against Michael Lorenzen in the past 30 days (MLB Rank: 114th of 117 qualified SP)

So yeah, you might want to make a small investment in Cards LHBs on Thursday.

Matt Carpenter, 3B, at Cin (Lorenzen), $17: One final blurb via Inside Edge:

Left-handed batters have a Line Drive Pct of 34.7% (35/101) against Michael Lorenzen this season (MLB Rank: this leads MLB of 135 qualified SP)

OK, I'm sold. I'll stop with the quoting. You get the point. Lorenzen has been not-so-great, and left-handed hitters pretty much own him (.436 season OBP, 1.033 OPS). Moving on...

Kurt Suzuki, C, at Tor (Buehrle), $10: As many of you know, I often shop in the junk-catcher market. It doesn't get much junkier than this. Suzuki is dirt-cheap, plus his history against Buehrle is encouraging: 12-for-31, HR, BB, zero Ks. Suzuki sat on Wednesday, so he should be good to go here.

Andre Ethier, OF, at Phi (Buchanan), $14: Buchanan has been crushed by left-handed humans this season (26-for-78, 10 XBHs, 12 BB, 6 Ks), so Ethier, Gonzalez, Grandal and other LHBs are very much in play. Andre entered has seven hits in his previous 18 at-bats (including two homers), so it's not as if he's struggling.

Odrisamer Despaigne, P, at Mil (Garza), $30: Obviously this could go horribly wrong, because Despaigne gives up the occasional messy stat line. But facing the last-place Brewers and the very hittable Garza (1.53 WHIP), Despaigne won't need to be perfect to get us a win. This price is plenty appealing.

Jake Lamb, 3B, at Was (Ross), $15: Lamb has been raking lately, with six multi-hit games (and two homers) in his last 11. Ross has been reliably not-terrible, but left-handed batters have actually hit him well (.300/.344/.533, 5 doubles, 3 HR).

Chris Heston, P, at CHC (Hammel), $46: Heston somehow hasn't allowed a homer since May 23 (at Colorado), which is insane. That's twelve consecutive homerless starts. Chicago is slashing just .239/.315/.374 as a team (not good), and I'm not sure the lineup has topped five runs in any game since, like, 2008. Heston should be safe here.

Michael Wacha, P, at Cin (Lorenzen), $13: Scroll back up to the top and check those notes on Lorenzen, please. This matchup favors Wacha in a ridiculous way. He tossed seven shutout innings with seven Ks in his last start, and his season ratios are still sparkling (3.09, 1.09). This is $47 well spent.

Mike Napoli, 1B, at NYY (Sabathia), $16: Napoli's second-half surge has kinda/sorta saved his season, as he's slashing .296/.377/.593 since the break. He doesn't have a worrisome history against Sabathia, either, for what it's worth: 10-for-38, 3 doubles, 2 HR, 4 BBs.
