Yankees to Blue Jays: 'You've got to take some of your medicine'

Emotions ran high in the Blue Jays and Yankees game on Monday night, from Josh Donaldson taking a pitch in the elbow guard in the first inning to Mark Teixeira's home run in the ninth.

The Donaldson hit-by-pitch was the first of three in quick succession, the other two causing the benches and bullpens to clear in the second inning. Yankees starter Luis Severino, manager Joe Girardi, bench coach Rob Thomson, and pitching coach Larry Rothschild were ejected.

The intensity simmered after that, but did spike a little bit after Teixeira admired his game-tying shot off Jason Grilli and flipped his bat on his way to first. Grilli and catcher Russell Martin appeared to take exception so when Teixeira got back to the dugout he turned and yelled "blown save!" toward the field.

Teixeira, who is retiring at season's end, was taken aback by the Blue Jays' reaction, considering their recent history of high-profile histrionics.

"Those guys do it all the time. They have fun with it. It’s the first time I’ve ever done it, so I’ll have fun with it too."

Chase Headley, the Yankees hitter that wore a J.A. Happ fastball in the rear end in retaliation for the Donaldson HBP, went even further, saying that if the Blue Jays can dish it out they should be able to take it too.

"They’ve got a lot of guys over there that have a lot of bravado, if you want to call it that. They enjoy it when they hit home runs. They enjoy it when they get outs. It rubs guys the wrong way sometimes.”

"Listen, (the Jays) are the kings of fun. The bat flip, the whole guys yelling at players. (Marcus) Stroman was screaming at our guys when he was pitching, yelling at guys to get off the effing field when he struck somebody out. You've got to take some of your medicine. They certainly have no shortage of emotion and, if you play like that, you've got to expect to get some it back.
