A tremendous performance against the defending champion Galaxy powered the Whitecaps to a fourth straight win while Toronto FC slumped to a third consecutive defeat despite a standout game from one of their stars.

Here's a closer look at how Canada's MLS teams fared in Week 5.

Chicago Fire 3 - Toronto FC 2

1. Defensive woes

Another game, more problems on defence for the Reds. Playing without starting centre backs Steven Caldwell and Damien Perquis, both out with calf injuries, the play at the back was not up to snuff. Far too often they were left out of position and were punished three times by Chicago. To make matters worse, TFC was forced down to 10-men after defender Warren Creavalle was sent off for a second yellow card infraction in the 67th miute.

"I feel as a collective group we ... are too [relaxed] and don’t recognize the moments where we need to defend with more urgency," noted head coach Greg Vanney.

2. Giovinco gets his first

Sebastian Giovinco opened his Toronto FC and MLS scoring account with a goal that will be remembered more for the set-up than for the quality of the strike. He also had an assist on Benoit Cheyrou's goal on Saturday but in the end Giovinco's good looking box score couldn't lift TFC to three points.

3. Time off

Toronto FC doesn't play again until April 18 when they take on FC Dallas, giving Caldwell, Perquis, and fellow defender Mark Bloom (quad) time to recover from their injuries and get back on the field. The positives vibes from the opening game win over Vancouver have quickly evaporated and this team needs to sort through their on-field issues before it's too late.

Vancouver Whitecaps 2 - Los Angeles Galaxy 0

1. Dominant display

The Whitecaps saved their best game of 2015 for the defending champion Galaxy. Vancouver enjoyed most of the possession and fired 18 shots toward goal, compared to just six shots for Los Angeles, and extended their winning streak to a club record four games.

"I think they've got to feel good about themselves, because they've just put on a performance against the best team," head coach Carl Robinson said after game. "What we've got to do, as I said last year as well, is be more consistent. If we're more consistent then we become a very, very good team."

2. Rivero does it again

Make it four goals in five MLS games for Octavio Rivero. The Whitecaps' marquee offseason signing has been terrific so far this season and continued his fantastic form, scoring another goal in large part thanks to his great attacking instincts.

3. Top of the table

Following FC Dallas' 3-1 loss to Portland on Saturday, Vancouver moved to the top of the Western Conference standings with 12 points from their first five games.
