In what has been a terrific Scotties week littered with great shots at critical moments, Saskatchewan's Stephanie Schmidt may have claimed the top shelf with a pistol of a peel in her team's playoff win over Team Canada today.

With play in the eleventh end of a 7-7 tie, Saskatchewan skip Stefanie Lawton's crew was in trouble, with the defending champions - skipped by Rachel Homan - pressing the issue and looking in good shape to perhaps steal their way to a win in the 3 vs 4 game, at Moose Jaw's Mosaic Place.

That's when Schmidt sprang from the hack to pull off this beauty.

That shot cleared everything out and led to Lawton having a clear draw to the eight-foot for the win, with her last stone.

An obviously elated Schmidt must also have been feeling some relief, as well.

In the tenth end, with her team up by two, Schmidt was caught in a hog line violation, failing to release her stone in time. With the rock being pulled at a critical moment in the end, the wasted shot was part of the reason Homan was able to score two to force the extra end.

Schmidt, who has curled exceptionally well all week long, was pressed into action when Lawton's usual second, Sherri Singler, had to withdraw from the Scotties when she suffered an ankle injury prior to the tournament.

Schmidt had played with the team during the first half of the season, but was scheduled to merely be an alternate for the Scotties.

Instead, she winds up in the line up and at the centre of the team's success, making a shot that paved the way for Saskatchewan's appearance in this afternoon's semi-final against Team Alberta.

The winner of that game will play Manitoba, for the championship, tomorrow night.
