Rio 2016: What to watch, Day 3 (Monday August 8th)

Man, I enjoyed that synchronized diving on Sunday. The diving was great, sure. But it's the synchronization part that really soars for me. I think the IOC ought to add that element to so many more events. Synchronized javelin. Synchronized weightlifting. Synchronized pole vault. All winners. Oooh!! Synchronized rowing! Wait, I guess we already have that.

Here's what's up on Day 3 (Monday, August 8th):

Genie Bouchard takes on Germany's Angelique Kerber in second round singles action. Bouchard really impressed in her opening round, straight sets win over American Sloane Stevens on Saturday and that has the Genie Army on the march again, hopeful that she is regaining the form that saw her get to a Wimbledon final in 2014. Tennis coverage is on Sportsnet One beginning at 11 am ET. Bouchard is scheduled to hit the court at around 11:15. Be aware; it is possible that her match gets moved to CBC.

Virtual reality boxing. That's a thing you can enjoy now. If you've got the technology available to you (basically a smartphone), CBC will be offering you the full 360 degree experience on Monday, with a virtual reality broadcast of the sweet science from 11 am - 2 pm ET and then again between 5 pm and 8 pm ET. Sweat coming at you from all directions! Slap yourself in the head whenever a punch is landed to enjoy the complete experience! Or, just sit back and relax and have someone else smack you. Don't step in the spit bucket!

Canadian women are in the Rugby sevens semi-finals. After losing to Great Britain, on Sunday, 22-0, Canada rebounded to defeat France 15-5 and punch a ticket to the semi's against top-ranked Australia. It's amazing how quickly these games come and go. Two halves, seven minutes each, and a two minute intermission. This is rugby for the Pokemon Go generation. Boom, you're in and out in about 20 minutes. It's a helluva lot of fun to watch. Canada vs Australia, CBC, 1:30 pm ET.

The weather started getting rough. The tiny ship was tossed. Sunday's rowing events were... scuttled, I guess, seems like a good word for it. With windy and choppy conditions dominating over the first two days, this competition really ought to be staged with the love theme from "Titanic" blaring from loudspeakers. Or Roy Scheider, from "Jaws" on a loop continually booming "you're gonna need a bigger boat." They'll try again on Day 3. CBC, 7:30 am ET.

Canada's women's basketball team, fresh off a 90-68 win over China in their opener, sets its sights on the team from Serbia on Day 3. CBC, 1:15 pm ET. The Canadians will meet Senegal on Wednesday and have a big, big one against the Americans, on Friday.

The U.S. men's basketball team is taking on Venezuela, on TSN2 at 6 pm ET. The Americans are coming off a 119-62 opening win against China. The team is not staying at the athletes' village but, rather, on a docked cruise ship, which seems appropriate when you think of the path they have to yet another gold medal. Not that they won't face at least a little push back along the way but this game isn't likely to provide that. Maybe the U.S. will play in deck sandals and robes just to even things up a little.

In men's field hockey, Canada takes on Argentina in a re-match of the gold medal game at last year's Pan Am Games, won by Argentina. Let's all shout the way Michael Palin did as he aimed his steamroller at Kevin Kline in "A Fish Called Wanda:" Revenge!! TSN2, 11:30 am ET.

Canada's Sam Schacter and Josh Binstock lost to Brazil in their beach volleyball opener over the weekend. Not only that, I understand they got sand in their shorts. Drag. They'll look to rebound against Italy. CBC and TSN2, 8 pm ET.
