May snow postpones FC Edmonton-Vancouver Whitecaps Voyageurs Cup match

The snow in Edmonton at Clarke Field postponed Wednesday's game. (@CanadaSoccerEN).

It's not unusual to have harsh weather affect Canadian sports, but it is a little unusual to see that in May. That's what's now happened in Edmonton, though; the snow that's hit the city led to the postponement of Wednesday's soccer match between the Vancouver Whitecaps and FC Edmonton at Edmonton's Clarke Field, which would have been the first of two legs between the sides in the semifinals of the Voyageurs Cup (also known as the Amway Canadian Championship). Instead, the first game between the teams will be played in Vancouver as previously scheduled on May 13; the Edmonton match will be made up on May 20. Here are some tweets illustrating just how snowy it is in Edmonton:

The Whitecaps are taking this with a good sense of humour, though. Here's midfielder Russell Teibert with a solid Frozen reference, and here's the team account with a nice GIF:

This scheduling change might alter the dynamics of the series, though. Edmonton now gets the final leg at home instead of the first one, so they'll know what they'll have to do in order to advance. This is a big deal, too; the winner of the two-leg series advances to the final (against either Montreal or Toronto), and the winner of that gets to represent Canada in the CONCACAF Champions League, where a berth in the Club World Cup is on the line (it's notable that current Canadian champion Montreal made it all the way to the CONCACAF Champions League final this year). We'll see if the date change winds up affecting anything, but in a high-stakes match like this, it's one more thing people may wind up talking about.

At the very least, there's going to be a lot of inconvience for the teams, players and fans caused by this rescheduling. Snow and soccer don't mix well, though, so the decision to move the game makes sense. This will certainly be memorable; snow during the fall and winter of the CFL season is one thing, but having snow cancel soccer games in May is something else. Only in Canada...
