Justin Bieber fans vandalize Rick Rypien memorial in Vancouver

The legacy Rick Rypien left on the Vancouver Canucks and their fans can be found in a memorial outside the Rogers Arena. But on Wednesday night that tribute was fouled in what some are calling "disgraceful" and "disgusting" behaviour by Justin Bieber fans (otherwise known as Beliebers).

As the teen pop superstar descended on Vancouver as a part of his "Believe" tour promoting his new album, some of his fans decided, no not to riot, but to vandalize a wall dedicated to former Vancouver Canucks forward Rick Rypien as a way to confess their "Bieber fever."

The news of the vandalism of course caught some steam on Twitter, and many used the social media hub to chime off on those who chose the memorial for Rypien as the place to express their love for the teen idol.

More than a year has passed since Rypien was found dead at his home in Alberta after losing his battle with depression. He was 27 years old and one of three NHL tough guys to die in the summer of 2011.

Yesterday was World Mental Health Day, an opportunity to raise public awareness about mental health issues around the globe. According the World Health Organization depression affects more than 350 million people of all ages.

If there's any positive to be pulled from Wednesday nights vandalism acts it's this: the reaction on social media not only proved the power of Twitter, but it showed much more importantly, that more than a year after his death Rick Rypien hasn't been forgotten.
