First Serve - Canadians on the pro tennis tour this week

Milos Raonic will be back next week at the ATP Tour stop in St. Petersburg, Russia, while Vasek Pospisil will back in action in Metz, France.

Meanwhile, there's a WTA Tour stop in Quebec City, and a $15,000 Futures tournament that's being played at the Aviva Centre in Toronto, home of the Rogers Cup.

With the comebacking Aleksandra Wozniak getting a wild card only into the qualifying, and top seed Madison Keys receiving a wild card into the main draw, there were two other slots in the 32-player draw going to Canadians.

Sharon Fichman is already out after a 6-0, 6-1 to the No. 5 seed, Germany's Annika Beck, in the first round Monday night.  Françoise Abanda, whose ranking dropped from No. 317 to No. 374 with the loss of the ranking points gained by qualifying at the US Open a year ago (seems like an eternity), faces No. 2 seed and defending champion Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia in her first-round match Tuesday night.

In Toronto, Frank Dancevic continues his "back to basics" tour after winning another Futures event last week. He's the top seed in a field that also includes Filip Peliwo and some of the national training centre juniors who didn't make it into the US Open juniors last week.

In Cary, North Carolina, a new $50,000 ATP Tour Challenger event has more Canadians: Philip Bester (out to No. 8 seed Connor Smith in the first round Monday), Peter Polansky and Brayden Schnur, who plays collegiately at the University of North Carolina and received a wild card.

Bester and Polansky are playing doubles together, as are Sharon Fichman and Carol Zhao in Quebec City.

Gloucester, Ont's Gabriela Dabrowski and Polish partner Alicja Rosolska, fresh from a disappointing first-round loss in the US Open doubles (they reached the third round a year ago), are the No. 3 seeds at another small WTA Tour event in Tokyo, Japan.
