Eugenie Bouchard voted WTA Tour’s ‘Rising Star of the Month’ for June

Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard wasn't going to win "Player of the Month" honours, with the woman who defeated her, Petra Kvitova, also nominated.

So, as a consolation prize, the fans voting on the Internet gave her the other award for which she was nominated, "Rising Star of the Month" for June.

It's one of those bizarre things; Bouchard was the "Newcomer of the Year" for 2013 – so how can she become a rising star six months later? At No. 7 in the world rankings, it seems to us as though she's already there.

(The fact that Kvitova and Bouchard played the Wimbledon final in July, not June, is another morphing of reality, but that's a whole other story).

Bouchard received 61 per cent of the vote, with the rest shared between two players who could more aptly be considered "rising": Americans Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe, both of whom won their first career WTA Tour titles – and in June, no less.

It's the third time this year Bouchard has received the "Rising Star" award: she also earned it in January after her semi-final effort at the Australian Open, and in May for winning her first Tour title in Nürnberg, Germany.

The actual criteria to be a "rising star" is that the players have to be 23 or younger. So Bouchard qualifies on that score.
