Just over a week after driving in a run in his first major-league plate appearance in front of his emotional parents, Dalton Pompey got a couple other big league benchmarks out of the way.

The 21-year-old from Mississauga, Ont. started in left field for the Blue Jays on Friday night against the Yankees. In his first at-bat of the night, Pompey drove a 3-1 fastball from New York starter Hiroki Kuroda over the second baseman's head and into right field for a base hit, the first of his career.

Before the game Pompey told John Lott of the National Post that one of the first thoughts that came to him when he found out he was in the starting lineup, was that he would be playing on the same field as Yankees great Derek Jeter.

Pompey told MLB.com he hoped someone would be able to snap a picture of him beside Jeter if he reached second base. As it turns out, his wish came true and then some.

Jeter, who is sixth on the all-time hits list and retiring at the end of the season after a stellar 20-year career, was the one who tossed Pompey's keepsake into Toronto's dugout. At the end of the inning, the future Hall of Famer congratulated the rookie outfielder on the accomplishment as they both made their way off the field.
