Canadian Sharon Fichman in main draw for her first career French Open

Canadian Sharon Fichman hasn't had much luck in the qualifying at Grand Slam tennis tournaments.

But with her good play so far in 2014, she has solved that problem.

Fichman, 23, has earned her way into her first-ever French Open (in either singles or doubles) as the official entry lists for the second major tennis event of the season were released Wednesday.

With her ranking currently at No. 89, Fichman easily was among the 108 players who received direct entry. The rest of the 128-player draw is made up of wild cards, and 12 players who win three matches in the qualifying rounds.

In three attempts at the qualifying in Australia, Fichman won just one total round. In two attempts at Roland Garros again, just one match win. And Fichman has lost in the first round at Wimbledon all three times she has played the qualifying.

Her only previous Grand Slam experience in singles was in New York last summer when, after four unsuccessful tries in previous years, she finally qualified for the main draw and lost to Sorana Cirstea of Romania in the first round.

So this is a big step for her, on the Grand Slam surface (red clay) most think she is best suited for even if her hard-court game has picked up in a major way the last 12 months).

Montreal's Genie Bouchard will also be in the main draw, and will be seeded. Aleksandra Wozniak, still coming back from a long injury layoff, will be in the qualifying along with Gloucester, Ont.'s Gabriela Dabrowski. Stéphanie Dubois, who is expected back from an arm injury next month, and Heidi el Tabakh, currently ranked No. 232 and No. 240, respectively, will be on the bubble for the qualifying but could make it.

On the men's side, both Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil will be in the main draw, with Frank Dancevic, Peter Polansky, Steven Diez and likely 20-year-old Filip Peliwo in the qualifying

It's too early to speculate about the seedings, which are established a week before the event. But with Juan Martin del Potro's injury absence, Canadian Milos Raonic needs to jump up one more spot to grab the No. 8 slot, which would help him avoir the top seeds he might otherwisee meet in the round of 16, if he gets there.

Vasek Pospisil, if they seeded now, would check in at No. 28. But he's currently less than 100 ranking points from being out of seeded territory (the top 32 players are seeded), so the next few weeks are key.
