At 34, Pickering, Ont.'s Adil Shamasdin to make his second Davis Cup appearance

Given he had a legend in front of him who wasn't going anywhere, Adil Shamasdin probably thought he'd never get a chance to represent his country in Davis Cup.

But with Daniel Nestor's calf injury suffered at the US Open not healed enough to be fit to play, the 34-year-old doubles specialist from Pickering, Ont. is scheduled to play the second tie of his career, after making his debut in the quarter-final round last year against Belgium.

Shamasdin, who reached the quarter-finals of the men's doubles at Wimbledon with British partner Johnny Marray, will be teamed up with Vasek Pospisil in the doubles rubber.

Before that, there are two singles matches to play on Friday,

1st Singles Rubber – Friday, September 16 – 3 p.m. AT

Frank Dancevic
(world No. 236)

Christian Garin
(world No. 260)

2nd Singles Rubber – Friday, September 16

(world No. 120)

Nicolas Jarry
(world No. 423)

Doubles Rubber – Saturday, September 17 – 2 p.m. AT

Vasek Pospisil (No. 12) / Adil Shamasdin (No. 70)

Hans Podlipnik-Castillo (No. 65) / Nicolas Jarry (No. 262)

3rd Singles Rubber – Sunday, September 18 – 1 p.m. AT

Vasek Pospisil

Christian Garin

4th Singles Rubber – Sunday, September 18

Frank Dancevic

Nicolas Jarry

The original start time Sunday had been 11 a.m., a request from Milos Raonic as he had a plane to catch for next week's ATP Tour event in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In his absence, that's no longer necessary.

Gonzalo Lama, 23, the highest-ranked Chilean singles player at No. 177, is sitting in favour of the two youngest members of the squad. Both Jarry and Garin are just 20 but are hardly rookies; Jarry has played in nine ties, Garin four.

If the Canadians manage to clinch the tie before the fifth and final rubber on Sunday, you'd expect 17-year-old rookie Denis Shapovalov to get a chance to play in the dead rubber and make his Davis Cup debut.
