What was long expected has now been confirmed: Andrew Wiggins will play for Canada this summer.

Wiggins told reporters on Wednesday ahead of Minnesota's final game this season that he "definitely" plans to suit up for the national team.

There was some thought the 20-year-old swingman might take it easy following his first NBA season, but Wiggins believes that his body will have more than enough time to recover from the 82-game grind before he jumps into action with Canada.

The Canadian senior men's team has a couple of commitments coming up, first the Pan Am Games in Toronto in July followed by the FIBA Americas Championship that begins in late August and is taking place in Mexico.

Head coach Jay Triano hopes to field a full strength squad at the Pan Ams and use the tournament to prepare for the crucial Olympic qualifying run. The top two teams at the FIBA Americas earn a berth to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Wiggins has had a terrific rookie campaign with the Timberwolves, averaging 16.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and one steal per game, and is the favourite to win the league's Rookie of the Year award.

Expected to join Wiggins on Canada's roster this summer are fellow NBA players Tristan Thompson, Cory Joseph, Nik Stauskas, and Tyler Ennis.
