Eugenie Bouchard hears it on social media after loss to qualifier in Miami

There are those who love Canadian tennis star Genie Bouchard through wind and rain and stormy Miami nights.

And there are those who denigrate her for her off-court popularity and all the hype that has surrounded her for more than a year, since her breakthrough performance in reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open in 2014.

The Canadian's victories bring out the love from one corner and ... mostly silence from the other. Her defeats – and Saturday's loss to qualifier Tatjana Maria in Bouchard's match at the Miami Open was a tough one to take – bring out the same love, but even those boobirds who normally sit on the fence come out on the other side. It's almost like there are people out there who get joy out of her struggles.

It's not pretty out there in social-media land even if on Bouchard's own Twitter and Instagram accounts, all remains sunny and cheery. You have to hope she turned off her phone and went out to load up on tequila shots with her twin sister, who flew down from Montreal to cheer her on.

After all they are – as of a month ago – of age.

Here are some of the comments in the wake of Bouchard's loss on Saturday (we've left out the ones with a little too much profanity - those typically come from the wagering contingent, those who bet big bucks on her to win the match and lost).

First, the love:

The "too many off-court distractions", "overrated hype" and "parties rather than practices" posse:

The crew that figure she's down, so there has never been a better time to hit on her (then again, some of them Tweet this on a daily basis!:

This intrepid fellow really thinks it comes down to love distractions.

There are the advice-givers and armchair (keyboard) psychoanalysts:

There is even the "Fed Cup karma" theory:

An incredible amount of acidity to heap on a 21-year-old.

And the above is just a tiny sample. Click here if you want the full range - sublime to ridiculous.
