For sheer degree of difficulty sweetened with desperation, it's tough to top the buzzer-beater that Queen's Golden Gaels guard Sukhpreet Singh made to complete a huge comeback victory on Saturday.

It's been the weekend of the big finish in Canadian Interuniversity Sport, where at least three games were decided in the final seconds. The shot that Singh made to give Queen's a 75-74 road win over the Western Mustangs on Saturday night had it all — a full-tilt race down the floor to get into the lane and sink the short jumper while falling backwards. Oh, and it completed a rally from a 24-point third-quarter deficit.

Queen's history of glorious men's basketball's moments is little thin, so it's safe to say this is their greatest moment since Mitch Leger hit a last-second three-pointer to beat Ottawa in 2007. Armchair coaches probably also took note of the nice work Queen's did of forcing Western scoring star Greg Morrow to give up the ball on the final Mustangs' possession, forcing the ball into the hands of George Johnson, who's a talented wide receiver in football but is also shooting 26 per cent from the floor this season.

Meantime, on the west coast, how about Unversity of Victoria Vikes rookie Amira Giannattasio? Even though she's a frosh and undersized for a Canada West guard at 5-foot-5, the Hamilton, Ont., native looked cooler than Ice Cube wearing snow skis (hat tip: Garfunkel and Oates) while swishing the buzzer shot in UVic's 80-78 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Nice way for UVic to secure a Canada West playoff berth. Anyway, this is the action taking place in gyms across the country every weekend in January and February, right up until the Final 8 tournaments in March.
