York Lions assistant coach charged with child luring

While few facts have emerged thus far, Canadian university football has been rocked by a case of alleged sexual abuse.

Daniel (Dan) Younis, recruiting coordinator and running backs coach for the York Lions in the Ontario University Athletics football conference, is in serious trouble. Younis was arrested and charged Thursday in connection with a child-luring investigation.

From Timothy Appleby:

Toronto police say the charges stem from a series of cellphone and Internet chats over the past three months, during which the alleged victim sent images of himself to Mr. Younis.

... York University released a statement Friday saying it has been advised of the situation and is “extremely disturbed about this very serious allegation.” (The Globe & Mail)

The Toronto Police media release notes, "Police believe there may be more victims."

York has removed Younis' bio from their football website, although Global Toronto reports he was still on staff with the Lions at the time of his arrest. It's a crime story first and foremost, but it happened in sports.

Younis was part of the coaching staff Lions head coach Warren Craney assembled after taking over the long-struggling program in 2010, when it was coming off back-to-back 0-8 seasons. Younis, who is originally from Ottawa, also coached with the Etobicoke Eagles in the Ontario Varsity Football League while working with York's program.

The Lions finished 2-6 and missed the OUA playoffs last season, but have made significant progress under Craney.
