Watch: Duron Carter comes up with a massive punt block and return for TD

Montreal Alouettes' receiver Duron Carter has been in the news for the wrong reasons over the last week thanks to a piece with a former Alouette calling him the "Worst. Teammate. Ever.", plus arguments with his head coach and his quarterback. Carter made the news for the right reasons in Friday's game against Hamilton, though, bouncing back from a pass he didn't come far enough back for to make a huge play on special teams, blocking a Ticats' punt, recovering the loose ball, and racing down the field for a touchdown:

That's one of the best special teams plays of the year, showing tremendous burst from Carter to get off the line and get to the ball, great awareness to circle back for the ball, and excellent moves to avoid tacklers once he picked it up. Granted, there's a low degree of difficulty here, as this was the fourth straight game the Ticats had had a punt blocked, but this was still a very impressive play from Carter. Making a play like that on special teams may help silence some of his detractors, too; playing on special teams takes plenty of hard work and dedication, often with little recognition, but Carter's willingness to do that and go hard on plays like this speaks well for him.

This certainly doesn't eliminate all the questionable things Carter's done this year, as he's created plenty of controversy. Whether bumping opposing coaches (and earning an ejection and an eventual suspension in the process) or arguing on the sidelines or at practice, it hasn't been the best season for him (despite his team-high 793 receiving yards heading into Friday's game) or for the Alouettes, who were 3-8 heading into Friday night's game. Despite continued offensive struggles, though, they took a 9-8 lead into the half, and Carter's punt-block touchdown was the key part of that. If he can keep finding ways like that to contribute and stay away from further bad storylines, the tone of the coverage about Carter may change substantially.
