Video: Modern Family delivers more CFL footage with an Argonauts-Alouettes game clip

It was a good week for the CFL in Hollywood. In addition to new Fargo star Billy Bob Thornton talking about how impressed he was by Roughrider fans, ABC sitcom Modern Family's Under Pressure episode aired footage of an Argonauts-Alouettes game as part of a subplot involving dads Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill) and Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) attempting to escape from a parent-teacher conference to watch "the football game." When they finally get to the teacher's lounge and get the game on, it turns out to be the CFL they're watching. Here's the clip:

While it may seem odd to see CFL footage pop up on a U.S. sitcom, it's not all that uncommon, as it's a lot cheaper to show game action from a league like the CFL than it is with the NFL or big-time U.S. college football. When the actual football shown isn't the primary focus, plenty of shows opt to go with CFL footage. In fact, Modern Family's done it before, as have several other shows. Of course, this kind of exposure isn't quite as prominent or quite as useful for the league as sitcom jokes that actually reference the CFL (which we've seen in 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother and The League, amongst other shows), but it's still a neat little Easter egg for those who are looking closely. You never know where a CFL reference will show up next, but there are many more out there than you might imagine.
