Video: Justin Trudeau announces 105th Grey Cup will be held in Ottawa in 2017

Ottawa reportedly won the right to host the 2017 Grey Cup almost a year ago, but that decision was officially announced Sunday, and in a pretty impressive way. Ahead of the Redblacks' home game against the Toronto Argonauts, members of the 1976 Grey Cup champion Ottawa Rough Riders were in attendance to meet fans and sign autographs, and famed alumnus Tony Gabriel (who made the legendary play dubbed "The Catch" to win that game for Ottawa) wound up carrying the Grey Cup onto the field for the official announcement from CFl commissioner Jeffrey Orridge. Before that, though, they played a video featuring Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau sending the Grey Cup to TD Place, complete with Mounties, the plaid-clad fans known as the LumberJoes canoeing down the Rideau Canal, and even Redblacks' mascot Big Joe/Grand Jos:

That's a pretty solid video, with plenty of great Canadian content, and it's great to see Trudeau work with the CFL for a big announcement like this. Here's video of the Mounties carrying the Cup out and handing it to Gabriel:

And video of Orridge's official announcement:

Putting the Grey Cup in Ottawa in 2017 makes plenty of sense, as it can be part of the celebrations of Canada's 150th birthday that year. TD Place should be an excellent venue, and the commitment and passion fans in Ottawa have shown to the Redblacks since their 2014 debut (in both good on-field times and bad) means tickets will likely go fast locally for the first Grey Cup held in the city since 2004. This was a long-rumoured story, and one that seemed highly logical, so the announcement isn't really that surprising, but the league handled this announcement very well. This is an excellent way to promote this game and get people excited about it, even more than a year ahead of when it will be held.
