Video: Esks' Calvin McCarty's one-hand grab is one of the year's best catches

CFL fullbacks don't often make the highlight reels, but don't tell that to the Edmonton Eskimos' Calvin McCarty. McCarty made not only one of the best catches of his career in Edmonton's 26-23 loss to B.C. Thursday, but a catch that might be the best one made by any CFL player this season. Here's video of it:

This play sees McCarty run to the flat well and provide a perfect option for quarterback Matt Nichols, who's rolling left and doesn't have anyone open downfield, but Nichols' throw is high and close to pursuing B.C. linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis. Under normal circumstances, this likely would have been an incompletion, or perhaps even an interception. McCarty somehow manages to grab the ball away from Hoffman-Ellis while still running forward, though, twisting his right hand around, cradling it and not even losing stride. That allows him to keep pushing forward and pick up the first down. As TSN analyst Matt Dunigan says on the clip, "That might be catch of the year!"

McCarty, a 30-year-old veteran out of Western Washington who's been in the CFL with Edmonton since 2007, has long been known for his versatility. He's been used as a running back, a blocking back and a pass-catcher over the years, and he's been a big part of the Eskimos' special teams as well. Still, this is taking versatility to a new level, with a catch that recalls the famed one-handed grabs of Odell Beckham Jr. and Tony Champion. It's an incredible play, and one that's one of the best we've seen this season.
