CFL Super Power Rankings: Anything can still happen in the East Division

Welcome to the new 55-Yard Line CFL super power rankings. Every Thursday we'll look back at the previous week and look ahead to the upcoming week, and rank the best teams, quarterbacks or anything else we see fit to rank.

After three upset victories over West Division teams last week, things are (finally) heating up in the East Division. The records still may not be impressive but the playoff race east of Winnipeg will be the CFL's most exciting.

As it stands heading into Week 14, the Argonauts, Tiger-Cats, and Alouettes are all tied with four wins, though Hamilton has a game in hand. Due to the slow start to the season, it still seems likely that the fourth-place team in the West will crossover into the East. But what a race it will be for the playoff spots in the East.

The difference between getting a bye to the semifinal, at home, and missing the playoffs completely could come down to a single game, or even a tiebreaker. There are seven weeks left in the regular season with lots of divisional games still to come. Don't let the sub-.500 records fool you, the race in the East is going to be fun to watch.

Team rankings:

1.

Calgary Stampeders (10-2; Previous: 1) - We're giving them a mulligan for their loss to the Alouettes last week. It was on the road, without their No. 1 quarterback and without Jon Cornish.

2.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-7; Previous: 5) - Why the heck not give them a big boost? They've won three of their last four games, the last two over tough West Division teams. I'm a believer.

3.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-3; Previous: 4) - Needed a rally and overtime to beat the Redblacks but got it done. And with Darian Durant on the shelf, Weston Dressler is becoming the go-to guy on offence.

4.

Edmonton Eskimos (8-4; Previous: 3) - Defence let them down in loss to Ticats. Suddenly have lost three of four.

5.

B.C. Lions (7-5; Previous: 2) - Their vaunted defence got lit up by Ricky Ray and the Argos.

6.

Toronto Argonauts (4-8; Previous: 7) - An impressive win for the Argos in the last of a four-game road trip. Now they play five of their next six at home with five games against East teams.

7.

Montreal Alouettes (4-8; Previous: 8) - The Als don't care who was or wasn't in the lineup for the Stamps. That was their signature win and puts them right back in the playoff race.

8.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (6-6; Previous: 6) - Sliding because of a bye week but also skidding along on a three-game losing slide. Brian Brohm starts at QB in Week 14.

9.

Ottawa Redblacks (1-10; Previous: 9) - Impressive performance on the road in Regina, but couldn't hold on for the win. They're improving though.

Coming up in Week 14:

Jonathon Crompton.
Jonathon Crompton.

Montreal at Ottawa, Friday, 7 ET - The Alouettes are riding high after upsetting the Stamps. The Redblacks, despite losing, should feel good about the way they played in Regina. Jonathon Crompton continues to impress and improve. Another sellout expected at TD Place but it's probably not enough. Pick: Alouettes.

Saskatchewan at Edmonton, Friday, 10 ET - The game of the week, and the first of three head-to-head matchups to come over the last six games. The Riders have a one-game lead in the race for a home playoff game. Quarterback edge goes to the Eskimos, home field will help, too. Pick: Eskimos.

Hamilton at Winnipeg, Saturday, 6:30 ET - Brian Brohm starts at quarterback from the Bombers, his first start since 2011 with the Buffalo Bills. The surging Ticats are winless on the road, and this is a good opportunity to get that first win. Pick: Tiger-Cats.

B.C. at Calgary, Saturday, 9:30 ET - The Lions have a better record on the road (4-1) than at home (3-4) and already have a win at McMahon Stadium this year. Running back Jon Cornish didn't play in that game, but he is expected to return this week. That alone makes Calgary the favourite. Pick: Stampeders.

Picks -- Last week: 2-2; Season: 30-18

Bye: Toronto - A week off before a crucial four-game homestand. They're getting healthy again and have to feel good about the way their offence is clicking.
