Banned by Edmonton, Ottawa loggers fire their saws up outside the Grey Cup

WINNIPEGThe Edmonton Eskimos were successful in banning the Ottawa Redblacks' logging team (the loggingsports team from Algonquin College, which fires up their chainsaws to cut off a wood "cookie" following Ottawa touchdowns at home) from sawing on the sidelines during Sunday's 100th Grey Cup, but they couldn't keep them from logging entirely. As TSN's Chris Cuthbert tweeted Sunday, the team fired up their chainsaws just outside Investors Group Field:

They're going to be on the sidelines during this game too, but sans chainsaws. The CFL issued a statement Sunday that the in-stadium wood-cutting part of their plan was denied:

"The league supports and encourages the presence and participation of the Algonquin Loggersports Team on the field at the Grey Cup game," the CFL said in a pre-game statement. "However, in response to concerns raised, and as the game is intended to be at played at a neutral site, the touchdown celebration that normally occurs at Redblacks' home games will not be allowed between kickoff and the final gun."

It's a pity that fans in attendance won't get to see the Redblacks'  touchdown celebration (mostly because the Eskimos don't have anything as cool and don't want to be left out), but at least this has made for a funny story, and at least the team did get to do some logging. The whole scandal has created some good headlines, too, like this one from the Ottawa Sun:

If only the CFL had deemed that the lumberjacks were okay...
