Many CFL fans have noticed Montreal Alouettes' quarterback Jonathan Crompton's long hair over the last year, but not everyone knows the story behind it. Crompton lost his former fiancée and good friend to ovarian cancer last year, and said she inspired him to grow his hair for Locks of Love, a charity that makes wigs for financially-disadvantaged children under 21 suffering long-term medical hair loss. It took Crompton two years to get his hair to the length needed to donate, but he took that plunge Tuesday, posting a photo of his new look on Instagram with a description of why he did it.

So, CFL fans won't get to see Crompton's flowing locks this season, but hopefully his decision will raise awareness for Locks of Love and perhaps even inspire others to follow suit. Here's what he told TSN last year about his former fiancée's death and how she inspired him:

Crompton went on to lead Montreal to victory in the midst of dealing with that loss, and he provided a lot of hope on the field for a team that started 1-7, helping them go 8-2 down the stretch to make the playoffs and then thumping B.C. to move on to the East Final. He's also provided a lot of inspiration off the field with his decision to grow out his hair for a good cause. Crompton's distinctive long hair will be missed, but the memory of why he did it will remain. His hair will help someone else out now, and his story might inspire others to follow suit.
