How good was Rory McIlroy’s year? He was named the PGA Tour Player of the Year for the second time in three years Wednesday, and he called into the teleconference while standing on the 18th tee at St. Andrews.
After a summer that included two majors and a World Golf Championships title, McIlroy was the no-brainer choice for the Tour’s top honor, which is voted on by the circuit’s members.
“They’re the guys that you’re trying to beat week-in, week-out, and the other guys see you put the hard work in, and to know that they appreciate what you’ve put into it and how well that you’re played, it’s a great honor,” said McIlroy, who is playing in this week’s Dunhill Links Championship on the European Tour. “Hopefully I can win it for many more years to come.”
Chesson Hadley, the only first-timer to win on the PGA Tour last season (Puerto Rico Open), was named the Rookie of the Year. A year after winning twice on the Web.com circuit, Hadley played in 29 events, posted back-to-back top-12s in the playoffs and finished 49th in the FedEx Cup standings.
McIlroy finished in the top 25 in all 17 of his starts, finished third in the FedEx Cup and won the Arnold Palmer Award as the Tour’s leading money winner ($8,280.096).
