FedEx Cup Playoff Preview: Only top 100 advance past Barclays

NBC on Yahoo Sports

It's no secret that this hasn't been a typical Phil Mickelson season.

His first top-10 on the PGA Tour didn't come until the recent PGA Championship, where he needed a runner-up finish just to vault himself onto the Ryder Cup roster for next month.

Mickelson heads into the FedEx Cup playoffs with some momentum now, but he's not sure even a few strong showings would alter how he'll forever view this season.

"I have to play well this week and in the FedEx Cup," he said in advance of The Barclays, "to really make the year salvageable."

But really: Would it?

"I don't even know if that would do it, because it hasn't been a great year and I'm OK with that. I know that I've made great strides this year in driving the golf ball … but it's been a terrible year for my wedges and short irons. I also had a very poor year putting.

"I'm actually more looking forward to 2015 and after these next few events, after the Ryder Cup, I'll probably take the rest of the year off, work on my fitness, work on my golf game and really focus on 2015, because 2015 is when the points start accumulating really for the Olympics. I don't know why that's important to me, but it is. I want to be a 46-year-old Olympian. That's pretty cool."
