Did Johnny Manziel's partying help Brian Hoyer's cause?

Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer joined The Dan Patrick Show to discuss the Browns' decision to name Brian Hoyer their starting quarterback. Though Johnny Manziel statistically outplayed Hoyer over the team's first two preseason games, Cabot says the rookie's offseason partying had a definite impact on his case to start under center.

"He started losing it on draft day when he decided that he was going to go on this eight- to ten-week long sort of frat boy partying spree," Cabot said. "And he continued to lose it all the way through flipping off the Redskins' bench on national TV on Monday night."

After going 22nd overall in April's draft, Manziel did end up in the tabloids a little more often than the Browns' front office might have wanted. Despite the team's desires for the former Heisman winner to tone down his off-the-field activity, Manziel's actions led some to believe that he wasn't ready for life under the NFL microscope.

Whatever the case may be, Hoyer will take the first-team snaps for the rest of the preseason, and barring injury, we will see him on the field in Cleveland's opener against Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, the debate rages on regarding Manziel's eventual debut.
