Phillies president taking medical leave of absence

Phillies general partner and president, David Montgomery, will take a medical leave of absence and step down from his duties with the team effective immediately, the team announced Thursday.

Montgomery, who has worked for the team since 1971 and took over as president in 1997, will be replaced on an interim basis by senior advisor and former general manager, Pat Gillick.

Montgomery, 68, underwent cancer surgery earlier this year.
