Stanford RB Bryce Love out with unspecified injury

Stanford running back Bryce Love will not play on Saturday.

Love, the 2017 Heisman Trophy runner-up, suffered an unspecified injury late in the No. 9 Cardinal’s win over USC over the weekend. Thusly, according to head coach David Shaw, Love will sit out against UC Davis, an FCS program.

Love rushed for 2,118 yards last season, but finished behind Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield in the Heisman voting. Mayfield went on to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. Love opted to return for his senior season.

Through two games in 2018, Love has 165 yards and one score on 40 carries. He rushed for 136 yards in the win over USC, but struggled with just 29 yards on 18 carries in the season-opening win over San Diego State.

A game against an FCS opponent would have been a good opportunity for Love to pad his stats, but Shaw decided it was in the team’s best interests for Love to sit out, especially with a trip to No. 22 Oregon coming in Week 4.

With Love sidelined, redshirt junior Cameron Scarlett will likely get the start. Scarlett has 534 yards and nine touchdowns in his career. He had two three-TD games in 2017.
