Ron Gardenhire insists he could tackle Dave Winfield on 'Old Baseball Cards'

Something you’ll know about new Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire after watching this week’s episode of “Old Baseball Cards” is that he can go low on anybody.

He’s talking about tackles and specifically about tackling Dave Winfield, the Hall of Fame outfielder who played for the Minnesota Twins when Gardenhire was a coach there in the ’90s. Winfield is 6-foot-6, one of the most impressive athletes of our time considering he was drafted into MLB, the NFL and the NBA. And Gardenhire is about six inches shorter.

Nonetheless, Gardenhire pulls a Winfield card out of a pack of 1983 Fleer and then talks about the time he threatened to tackle Winfield. And that’s the kind of nostalgia we like on “Old Baseball Cards.”
