Kings owner will no longer operate WNBA franchise

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—The Sacramento Monarchs folded on Friday, a shocking and disappointing development for the WNBA and one of its original eight franchises.

The decision was largely based on the Maloof family’s desire to focus all its energy and efforts on the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. Maloof Sports & Entertainment had owned both teams.

Now, the WNBA is left scurrying to try to find a new owner for the organization and a suitable market: with the most logical place being the Bay Area, perhaps in Oakland or San Jose.

League president Donna Orender said in a statement Friday that the league is in discussions with potential investors to relocate the Monarchs to the San Francisco area in time for next season.

The Monarchs franchise was one of the league’s original eight teams and it won the WNBA championship in 2005 and the Western Conference title the following season.

The Monarchs’ Web site—http://www.wnba.com/monarchs/—for most of the day carried a message reading, “PICTURE YOURSELF as a 2010 MONARCHS Season Ticket Holder.” It was changed by the afternoon, when the site carried only Orender’s statement.

While it was difficult to reach anyone in the franchise’s offices Friday, the team said it would not comment on the situation further and directed inquiries to the WNBA. Some employees work for both the Kings and Monarchs, so it was unclear how many jobs might be affected.

“We enjoyed our time with the WNBA and the Monarchs,” co-owner Joe Maloof said in a statement. “We are extremely proud of an amazing run that included six straight playoff appearances and the 2005 WNBA Championship. All of our resources are now dedicated to bringing the Sacramento Kings back to championship caliber form.”

Sacramento had several familiar faces when it comes to women’s basketball in the area: former Stanford star Nicole Powell, Olympic gold medalist Kara Lawson, and Courtney Paris, the former Oklahoma star from nearby Piedmont, Calif.

The franchise is scheduled to have the second pick in the 2010 WNBA draft.

“The Bay Area has been a desirable market for the WNBA and the availability of the Monarchs provides an opportunity to move a well-known franchise and broaden its fan base within Northern California,” Orender said in the statement. “Maloof Sports & Entertainment, owner of the Monarchs, has deemed it essential to focus all of its resources on the Sacramento Kings at this time. We understand this decision was a difficult one for them and appreciate the vision, leadership, and support of the Maloof family over the past 10 years.”

Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment, which runs the NHL’s San Jose Sharks and HP Pavilion—a potential WNBA venue—could be an option explored by the WNBA. The organization had not yet been contacted by the WNBA.

“Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment is always interested in listening to proposals to bring high-quality events into HP Pavilion at San Jose that are mutually beneficial to both the City of San Jose as well as our organization,” SVSE president and CEO Greg Jamison said in a statement, responding to an inquiry by The Associated Press. “We have not had any discussion with the WNBA to bring a team to San Jose.”

The Oakland-based Golden State Warriors are in support of the idea of a WNBA team playing in Oakland, but would not affiliate themselves with a franchise. That would have to be worked out with the City of Oakland and Alameda County. The Warriors play at Oracle Arena.

Movi W ya are like so incorrect. The Maloofs are not like close to even being the the richest owners in the league. They also own just a majority of the team and not 100% of the team. And any one with common sense know for a FACT that there will never ever be any NBA team in Las Vegas. The gambling is the issue there. Comparing them to AL Davis is ignorance of the facts. it is like saying Michael Jordans divorce he had and saying he is just like Mike Tyson. Running a company is keeping it solvent and profitable. I will sorely miss the Monarchs also, but the drain of cash combined with fan apathy with the Kings is a huge monetary lose. Ya do not think the Maloofs got hit hard during the current economy? I bet like all the rich people they lost 30-40% of there net worth. The Kings future is indeed very bright. We I feel in 2-3 years will be the team we had back in the C-Webb days.

The Maloofs are and have always been greedy, selfish pieces of @#$% who gave up on their teams years ago. Folding on the Monarchs is simply another example of their bull@#$%.
Truth is, they have NEVER cared for their Sacramento teams...they have always had one foot out the door and into Vegas. They are quickly becoming the next AL DAVIS.
The local special interest groups, developers and millionaires need to pull their heads out and kick the Maloofs ass OUT of Sac. Its that simple.

I am dissapointed that there is just no interest in keeping these teams in business. I hope the Monarchs end up in another Califormia market that will support them. I live in New York and have season tickets to see the Liberty. Those ladies don't get paid much more than us fans watching them, but their skill level is incredible! They are all very talented basketball players. It is an affordable alternative to seeing the overpaid Knicks stumble around the court getting blown out every night. If anyone should fold - maybe the god awful NJ Nets would fit the bill. They cannot even win one game, yet their fans turn up night in and night out to watch them. It is just sick.

Boo hoo! I'll just take my basketball and go home. The Maloofs are hip-o-crits. At least with the money they spent on the WNBA they got a championship. How long have you been pumping the money into the KINGS?

I’m really disappointed in the Maloofs for dumping the one team that got them a championship. As a season ticket holder for the Monarchs I will really miss them, but wish them the best of luck in whatever new market they end up in and i hope to see them wherever they end up. I also worry that this is a signal for fate of the Kings as well. Anyone who has been paying attention knows the Maloofs have wanted to move the Kings to Las Vegas and I think dumping the Monarchs is the big step in that direction.

Donna Orender must have feelings of deja vu all over again. She was a handful of players to play all three seasons in the old WPBL (she was Donna Geils, then), before it collapsed like a house of cards in a high wind.

No tears...it's time for the WNBA to go away. While there is a core group of fans, the base needed to keep the league alive just isn't there. There only chance for survival would be to move to smaller cities and smaller arenas, but as long as the league follows in the NBA's footsteps, that is never going to happen.

It is a sad day for this city to not be able to call the Monarchs team our own. They graced this city with a championship, as well as almost getting a second one, thank you Monarchs!! My very best wishes to all of you for your future.Good luck to everyone involved.
