ATP says it can’t reopen Agassi drug case

LONDON (AP)—The ATP Tour will not reopen a doping case against Andre Agassi even though he admitted to lying about using crystal meth in 1997.

Agassi revealed in his recent autobiography that he failed a 1997 drug test, a result he says was thrown out after he lied by claiming he “unwittingly” took crystal meth.

However, ATP chairman Adam Helfant said on Friday that there was no way to sanction the American retroactively since he has retired from tennis.

“There has been a lot of speculation about whether the ATP would reopen the case, but we cannot do that because he’s no longer playing on the tour,” Helfant said at the ATP World Tour Finals in London. “I asked an outside law firm to go through the records from 1997 so I had all the facts. Andre Agassi has admitted he failed a drugs test in 1997 and regrettably he then lied about it. Even more regrettably he got away with it.”

He said the ATP’s decision not to reveal the positive test was in line with its policy not to comment on doping cases.

“If we had revealed that test it would have been in contravention of the rules at the time,” he said.

Helfant said he had a “very frank conversation” with Agassi after the book came out, and that the ATP has responded to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s questions about the case.

“But what was said will remain between us and will not be made public,” he said.

Who really believes Agassi? he lied once about meth..what else is he hiding? we are supposed to believe everything he wrote now..if he wrote it at all...and he did not just cheat himself...he cheated the sport..the sport that made him a millionaire.
I for one do not believe him...once a liar...always a liar..and he probably used for than meth... he is just admitting to meth now..conveniently. what about the others Andre.

to noypi..lokoloko ka talaga baka ikaw diyan nag-sha2bu uso sa pinas yan kaya wag mong isali si Sampras sa mga kagaguhan mo,k. If you have nothing good to say better shut yourself and plan camote. Sampras is the great player that he is and accomplished everything he accomplished with legitimate power without the aid of any illegal drugs do tulad ni Agassi na nag shabu kagaya mo!

Post #79 noypi- Please do not involve Sampras in this Agassi

#79 noypi- Please do not involve or include Sampras in the Agassi Saga- Re Drug Use. Or if he ever did as you thought- I do not think he will do what Agassi did. Sampras is a very private person. Even when he was te number 1 tennis player in the world for for so many weeks- he was so humble. Arrogance is not in his vocabulary. He let his racket do the talking. He is now retired and moving on with his very private life, taking care of his family-his wife and his two sons. So, please noypi- leave Pete Sampras alone.
pete'sbest14- what can you say about noypi's comment on this board-re our favorite player- Pistol Pete?

MASTER CONTROLLER, To answer your question, yes I would find Andre interesting to talk to. As a clinician, I have seen so many parallels to the Andre Agassi story. That may be where my empathy for the man,not the tennis player, comes from. From my perspective ,it doesn't matter how you start a race but how you finish it. Agassi was often a sullen spoiled brat but has seemed to turn his life around . If our lives were summed up and evaluated by one bad period, I fear most of us would fall short. It has been interesting debating with you and I respect your right to disagree with me. No hard feelings on my part.

Well, if the ATP officials can't reopen the Agassi doping case, maybe the higher sports commission in London can reopen but this time against ATP officials who did not do their job against Andre. They should be accountable for their failures in letting Andre get away with it even though they knew that Andre used it but did not give him a punishment according to the ATP laws.

Ann, at least give me credit for having explaining my reasons for disliking the man. Be honest, is he the kind of guy you would like to spend your personal time with? Your buying a car analogy doesnt work. Before I buy a book on Amazon for example, I read the reviews and product descriptions. True, I don't like the man, but I have enough personal experience, read critic reviews, read contemporary opinions and seen live interviews that I am pretty sure I won't like the book either. But if it will make you feel better, I will consider ordering it from the library when it becomes available.

Agassi should have won over 11 Slams. To me he's in the top 3 with Federer and Sampras in terms of the most talented players in the modern era. The only person he cheated was himself.

Master Controller, First and foremost, I am not the type of woman never was the type of young girl affected by crushes...moot point and quite sexist to insinuate that a woman evaluates by emotion rather than by logic. Let me assure that as a Neuroscientist, my Amygdala usually doesn't over ride my Dorsal attention circuit. You just verified my argument that your opinion was based on your dislike of the man. Furthermore, how do you know what the purpose of this book is when you haven't read it's contents. You admit that your opinion is based on other peoples reactions. I ask you, would you purchase a vehicle from a salesman on his word, with out taking it on a test drive? As to my comparing Agassi's book to a theologian's homily, your interpretation is wrong. My point was that some posters negate his purpose in wring a book because there is a profit to be made and I merely suggested that a theologians sermon is not less relevant or truthful because he receives a salary. One example is as ridiculous as the other. You have stated that you never had any use for the man and this revelation has added to your loathing. Fair enough! You can call into question the fact that Andre used a drug and lied about it. This is a fact. What is not fact, is that he had a devious selfish motive. That is your suposition!

Ann P's point is judge not, lest you be judged. There is no contradiction, Ann. Reading his book, which is written by Bagofgassi's hand-picked author and edited by himself and his cronies is going to provide a one-sided perspective on his character. It is true I do not like the guy, but you think my opinion is without value because I haven't read his book. Well, if you had read my threads, you would know that I dislike him for his style of play and his on-court and off-court behavior. The book only buttresses my unfavorable opinion of him based on the reviews I have read and comments made by his contemporaries. Let me provide you some tennis names that I do respect: Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl, Michael Chang, Billie Jean King, Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova and Rod Laver. For balance, let me offer players that I dislike intensely along with you-know-who: Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Ilie Nastase, Marat Safin, Jeff Tarango and Serena Williams. Now if you want to defend every player I named, go ahead. Bottom line for me is his book, which apparently was written to clear the air, actually polluted his image further. Ann, you lost your unbiased credibility when you compared Agassi's book to a Rabbi's sermon or a priest's homily. Perhaps you should read his book between the lines. Unless you simply love him warts and all no matter what he does or says or profits from. Did you have a school-girl crush on this guy? Did he toss you a sweaty headband? Please tell us how this books helped agassi become such a role model for you?

To Master Controller#79, Hypocrisy rules your post, sir. I refer to your earlier post, that I assure you I have read. Post # 61 are your own words and validate what I point out as inane reasons for your diatribe against Agassi. If you read some of my other posts you will see I also mention that this your prerogative. As for the snide remarks about religion......no sarcasm intended, just pointing out a fact. You are a study in contradiction. You cite all these silly reasons you hate Agassi, his bald head, shaved legs how he walks, his choice in women ect. and say you don't care about them in a latter post. You have to care enough to hate him for it. As to your not seeing remorse, you state you will not read the book, don't need to read his hate speeches ect. but conclude he is not remorseful. I suggest that is" preconception " in it's finest form. I suggest to you that you are not a psychologist or seer and therefore are in no position to judge his intentions. To have so much hate for someone who you have never met, don,t know on a personal level and who doesn't impact your existence is sad. Lets just say we have different takes on the subject, you know the half empty half full glass adage, and leave it at that.

You can't accuse these tennis players like Federer, Serena using illegal drugs without valid evidence unless if they admit it like Andre.Well,Andre's case forget it! it is now too late to punish Andre because of all those enutile, ineffective, incompetent ATP officials!
Many tennis fans have been shocked by Andre's illegal drug's admission. How about if Sampras will come out his own book or admits using illegal drugs during his time as a tennis star? Well, Sampras is not a stupid guy who will do what Andre did, but it is also possible that Sampras might have used illegal drugs and again, we don't know unless Sampras will admit it.
