Serena beats Venus to win WTA Championships

* Serena wins year-ender for first time since 2001

* Tired Venus no match for her sister

(adds Venus quotes)

By Martyn Herman

DOHA, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Ruthless Serena Williams underlined her dominance at the top of women’s tennis on Sunday, completing her year in style with a 6-2 7-6 defeat of big sister Venus in the final of the WTA Championships.

The two Americans, facing each other across the net for the 22nd time in their glittering careers, provided nearly an hour and a half of power tennis under the Khalifa Stadium floodlights but there was only going to be one winner.

Serena, who came to Doha ranked second in the world behind Dinara Safina but will return home as the rightful number one after winning both the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles, broke serve twice in a one-sided first set.

Defending champion Venus did make more of a match of it in the second set but never got close to breaking the Serena serve that leaked just seven points in the entire match.

Serena pressed the accelerator in the tiebreak to build a 5-1 lead and although Venus clawed back three points, the 28-year-old completed victory with her fifth ace followed by a fizzing forehand into the extremity of the court.

“It’s nice to finally win a tournament other than a grand slam,” said the 11-times major champion who last won a title outside the season’s big four in April 2008.

“We definitely weren’t physically 100 percent out there today but it just shows you how much we try. Even in the second set, how hard we just both fought, especially Venus, she was getting every ball back.

“I’ve seen Venus return better, and I served well. I think I really did serve well.”

$1.5 MILLION JACKPOT

Serena’s perfect week earned her the maximum $1.5 million jackpot after she won all of her round-robin matches on her way to claiming the season-ending showpiece for the first time since her debut in 2001.

The only set she dropped during a week when she was head and shoulders above the elite field was against Venus in the round-robin stage.

Venus, at 29 the oldest woman in the eight-player draw, had spent nearly 11 hours on court in oppressive heat and humidity to reach the final with all three of her group matches, two of which she lost, and her semi-final going the distance.

She refused to blame injuries or the fact she had a tough fight against Jelena Jankovic the day before while Serena had an easy ride when Caroline Wozniacki pulled out injured after just one set of their semi-final.

“I’ve been playing for a long time. I’m not going to be the one to say, ‘Oh, I played forever yesterday’. You have to show up and play no matter what. That really has nothing to do with it.

“I just made a slow start and although I served better in the second set I didn’t serve as well as I wanted to.”

Both players wore substantial strappings on their legs but whereas Venus looked weary, Serena seemed full of energy as she kept her sister on the back foot.

The crowd, easily the biggest of the week, willed Venus to lift her game in the second and she raised her level sufficiently to keep Serena at bay but it was not enough to give the tournament the kind of finale the WTA had hoped for. So Champion Serena is a fat pig. If that isn't an unbridled racist statemnt. well...Happily the effort is aiways to "bring them down" and not having to push up as in the case of your favorites who are yet to win a major - the champions zone.
Whoever wins...a Williams champion...eat your hearts out ...and your finger nails as well...ha ha ha

Viktor, it'll be alright. Calm down. Just let it go. I doubt you know Serena in her real life, so there's no way that you can make those types of judgments against her. Just like I can't jump and say that you must have a third grade education with all of your grammar errors...

Even if Serena is best her lack of grace makes her extremely arrogant and ugly. Yesterday she could at least show some respect and sympathy for Caroline. But no, she looked totally disgusting and arrogant and it seemed like she realy thought, that she has won the match not because of Caroline's injury but in a hard battle. As much as I appreciate her as a player I sorry for her as a person. She really lookes like selfish, spoilt human being. She's not a star, her sister is.

    You are a pri*k!

That is what you are. Get over it. The William sisters have proven their worth and their standings. Don't blame them for winning their matches fair and square. If you don't like them, shut up and no need to be racist about them.

Venus and Jankovic played only one set at the Garden (Venus, 6-4). The winner then went on to play best 2 out of 3 sets. Serena beat Venus, 6-4, 6-3.

Next year, Serena, Kuznetsova and Clijsters will be at the Garden. The 4th participant will probably be decided by what happens at the 2010 Aussie Open.

Well, DAYUM! When was the last time Venus beat Jankovic on any surface other than grass? When was the last time she came back from a set down to beat her?

Although it looks as if Venus has been losing her hardcourt mojo for the last 5 years, it looks as if her complete demise on the hard surfaces has been greatly exaggerated.

The record suggests that Serena will probably win this matchup; and although I don't expect Venus to come up big at the Australian or French Open (she doesn't play well in January, and clay is her worst surface), I do expect her to remain a major contender. Even though Serena beat her at this summer's Wimbledon, the grass is still her domain. Although 9 may be out of the question right now, I think she can still win #6 and #7 to tie Steffi before she retires.

this is for the person who posted at #24. why don't you be honest and express your racism by stating that you would root for and prefer anybody white, even if they're european or from the former soviet bloc. it's people like you who propose to be "patriotic," and pro-american, yet when it comes to the williams sisters, you can't root for them. are they russian, swedish or german?? no, they're american, yet you can't bring yourself to root for them; you refer to them as apish!!! all i can say is that you must be wallowing in your racism and misery at seeing them in, yet, another final. and yes, serena is number one over safina; better player, better record, your people and their computer tried their best to take that away. if you can't beat 'em, steal it from them.

soyung_kim boring......you do not have to watch. Where is Zie Jheng or Na Li eh? What happened to the other 6 players that were playing against them, eh?

kgm---hummm Venus and Serena are wonderful. I just want them to stop a moment. Rest up, get completely well. Both of them are injured. Whether we believe that or not. Thankfully they lasted pass the others. They will play through if at all possible. Good posts, kgm

    4. Svetlana is near perfect, the lack of focus/attitude wrong. She has had the sisters running.
    6. Elena can get the job done just get rid of the jitters.
    7. Marion stated herself that she studies to play the Williams sisters.
9, Flavia, a favorite player for me, just need to step it up a little more. She's been there.

And I believe that Justine and Kim has been studying the Williams sisters forever too. Justine stated she will be having a new serve on her return.

    Robert T. , I feel the same.

And to the people who write ugly, hateful, malicious words against Serena and Venus, go ahead. Until they choose to leave tennis behind for good, there is no more that you can do because you will never be able to phantom the Williams sisters (Venus and Serena) drive, spirit or being......and I am standing in the corner, smirking.......and I know that is so wrong of me.

People complain when Venus and Serena play in the finals of grand slams and talk about conspiracies. They fail to remember that 12 other mostly ranked women, especially in the late rounds, had a chance to beat them. Each match of the 6 Venus and Serena would play in such grand slams began 0-0, and the opposing player had a racket in their hands. In some cases, the opposing player served at match point. Venus and Serena should not have won all the grand slams they have if the opposing players in the preliminary rounds had the same guts and desire to close out matches. The power is there, the serve is there for both, but they ultimately win with will. You don't see that same will with Kuznetsova, Dementieva, Petrova, etc.

It's really disappointing to see these immature posts on the tennis line that sometimes eventually lead to insults about Obama. I didn't know he was on the WTA tour.

When push-comes-to-shove...you can rely on the Americans' best in womens' tennis. Gob bless and good luck to both Serena and Venus! Regain strength and focus for the Aussie Open, the French Open, The Wimbledon, the Rogers Cup, Miami, Charleston N.C., and be real prepared for the demeaning, the pits, the unfair, the prejudice, the caca, the unscrupulous, the abominable, the biggest liar, and the ultra version of manipulation...The US Open tournament (you need to wake up
US Open organizers!!!). Maybe add Rome, Spain, and Fed cup for the next years to come? Anyway, Serena and Venus excellent job again this year!!!...as long as you will never touch drugs..have humility and pride; your future in tennis and in other career shall be blessed and helped by The Heavenly Forces."

Serena is showing the fans, the haters, and the rest of the world that Venus and her are the two best (active) in womens tennis this decade and the next ( at least till 2014) decade till they both retire. When Serena and Venus are healthy and focused; nobody can beat them. As a matter of observations, when Justine Henin begun losing the tournaments during Serena's emotional recovery from her sister's death which Serena started winning slams and tier I tournanaments again...Henin decided to retire afraid of losing the no. 1 rank. If she didn't she would lose face being demoted in ranking. Instead, she retired as no. 1 and kept her dignity...wise guy! Now watch Kim Clijster hold on to only 1 slam winning...like years ago she only won 1 slam. Like what stated before, when Serena and Venus are healthy and focused nobody can dethrowne them because they got the talents, the power, the motivations (from being treated as minorities and from simply being borned winners), the height, the techniques, excellent forms, right execution, the proper mental behavior, the guts, the looks and attitudes of modern era sports and business women, and the preparation of their tennis and life's destiny by both their parents: "the Williamses got the the right equipment." They are simply the best! And watching the elites played from straight two years of observation this is how I rank them...
#1--- Serena Williams (got it all)
#2--- Venus Williams (got it all )
#3--- Jelena Jancovic (talents, patience, wisdom, attitude, mental strength, & smiles)
#4--- Svetlana Kutznetsova (power, techniques, forms, talents, lack of focus/attitude)
#5--- Maria Sharapova (even w/ injuries she got good serve, power, and attitudes)
#6--- Elena Dementieva (no service techniques at all, purely the eagerness to win)
#7--- Caroline Wosniacki (cunning play compensate lack of talents, w/ fair serves)
#8--- Marion Bartoli (talents, attitude, non-conformist, needs to study other players)
#9--- Flavia Pennetta (talents, forms, needs to work on attitude and mental focus)
#10-- Victoria Azarenka (the talents being overshadowed by lack of focal agenda, undecisive)

I could not have said it any better because I feel the same way you do. I would continue to wish that they strive to achieve any other goals set, whenever that time comes. I hope their lives are very productive and soar much more with their designing and other interest. I love it that they are so smart to do so many other things to define who they are by having other interest in life beyond the game of tennis. Wonder young women and thanks to Mr. and Mrs Williams for sharing their daughters with the world.
