Serena triumph clouded by fears over WTA health, wealth
DOHA (AFP) - Serena Williams heads for 2010 as world number one, WTA Championships, Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, but there's a worrying storm gathering over women's tennis.
The new year should spark a celebration of marquee match-ups where the Williams sisters renew their epic rivalry with the returning Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin.
Hopes are also high for a fully-fit Maria Sharapova to grace more tennis courts than red carpets, while Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka lead the new generation.
Williams pocketed 1.55 million dollars for relieving sister Venus of her WTA Championships title here on Sunday, but it wasn't the only mind-boggling sum giving the WTA headaches.
The deadline for a renewal of the tour's 88-million-dollar, six-year agreement with title sponsor Sony Ericsson is the end of the year, but the global financial crisis is never far from sports' front doors.
"We are looking at our sponsorship seriously. We haven't made any decision yet, and all options are open," said Aldo Ligouri, vice-president and head of global communications at Sony Ericsson.
When the deal was signed in 2005, it represented a much-needed boost for the WTA, which had been without a title sponsor in 2003 and 2004.
However, Ericsson recently reported a 74-percent fall in net profit blamed on falling sales and problems at its Sony Ericsson venture.
If that wasn't enough, there are signs that the WTA Roadmap, designed to protect the long-term health of its top stars, may not be having the desired effect.
The 4.55 million dollar WTA Championships featured the world's top eight players.
By the end of the week, however, 10 had taken part with one alternate even being replaced by another.
Tearful Dinara Safina lasted just two games and 12 minutes, losing her world number one spot while Wozniacki and Azarenka quit before the end of their involvement.
Serena played the final with her left thigh bandaged; Venus needed protection for her left knee.
"We definitely weren't physically a 100-percent today. But it just shows you how much we try," said Serena, who blamed physical exhaustion on her decision to withdraw from the US team to face Italy in the Fed Cup final.
In 2009, players saw their WTA tournament commitment cut from 13 to 10.
Both Williams sisters have played 16 events, including the four Grand Slams; Wozniacki played 90 matches in a year which saw her reach the US Open final and reach four in the world.
"We were asking the athletes to play 13 commitments, and they're down to 10," said Stacey Allaster, the WTA chief executive.
"If we don't have healthy athletes, you know, we can't have a level of product that we want."
While Serena flies into 2010 as world number one, 29-year-old Venus knows time is ticking.
The holder of 41 titles, it's been eight months since she last held up a trophy and she looked sluggish in Doha, squeezing into the semi-finals despite losing two of three round-robin encounters.
However, she will enter her 14th year on the tour determined to prove that she still has a role to play.
"I hope I will be completely healthy. Hopefully, some luck will be with me and bad luck with someone else," said the American.

More prize money should go to the first rounds in tournaments because there are a lot of players who can barely afford to travel, and some of them can't.
A lot of this money should go toward converting and maintaining grass courts. Playing on hard courts is a big factor in the incessant injury problem in the WTA.

First the Williams sisters are gracious winners but they are not gracious losers. I have watched atleast 25 post match interviews and they always make excuses like my injury or my double faults. They never say the other plauyer was better that day.
The other is that Serena is the tops but Venus is no longer. Venus is on the downside of her career. She was a great champ but I stress WAS., It is Serenas time to shine again but Venus unfortunately will never regain #1.
As for anymore sanctions I doubt very highly if they will punish her anymore than the fine. The do not want to explain why they are punishing the #1 player and, as much as most people don't want to facethe truth, the Williams .

I've been sitting here with my trusty little calculator trying to see what all I could buy with 1.55 million :-)
I've decided first things first! SO, first I would immediately buy another "giant" bottle of Tylenol. That's stuff's expensive!!
Then I'd make certain the new little grandson has his college trust fund all secured, "wherever" he would prefer going in 18 years :-)
Then I guess I'd buy a new van, my old one is beyond it's warranty so guess that would be a good investment, plus I've always wanted a RED car!
Let's see...then I guess it would be a trip to Egypt ,with none other than the most esteemed Dr. Bob Brier as my 'personal' tour guide, to see all the things I've only read about and studied about and collected for 40+years, first class all the way, of course :-)
Then try to convince my husband to retire, `cause we'd have real MONEY!!!
Finally, I think I'd try to locate all the new body parts (of mine) which have just about worn out..find a country & surgeon willing to do it, fly over and have a "make-over"!!
Might have a few dollars left over and that would buy that really pretty pair of shoes I saw in the window at Macy's.
Ridiculously expensive, but what the heck, it's only MONEY!!!
And of course I'd give 10% to our church and they could FINALLY buy that new organ they've been needing for so long and we Parishioners would be able to FINALLY take out the ear plugs Sunday mornings :-)
Yep, that's what I would do with 1.55 million.
To dream big is what every one should do~just because those dreams are never realized, means your fortune in life simply has 'yet' to be found. Never give up on a dream because that is when it will die~
What would you do Truth?

Serena Williams
Billie Jean King
Martina Navratilova
Margaret Court
Roy Emerson (only man to ever accomplish it!)
pretty rarified company serena is keeping!!
this, coupled with the fact that serena is one of only 5 women to hold all 4 grands slams titles at one time, makes serena undeniably one of the all-time greats!!!

ONCE AGAIN, JOY TALKING OUT BOTH SIDES, SAYING WHAT IS RIGHT, AND IGNORING THAT SERENA USUALLY IS ON THE WRONG SIDE WITH HER ACTIONS.

For the person that said they did not watch because they are unattractive, you show your that you are not truly a tennis fan. I don't happen to agree with your assessment but a true fan of tennis tunes in to see great tennis not to judge appearance. I have no idea what you look like. To the world around you, you may be extremely unattractive but does that keep you from performing.
For those who feel Serena doesn't deserve anything. None of us does. We are what we are and have what we have by the grace of Almighty God. I will say Serena has worked hard to hone her craft and is reaping the benefits of her efforts.
For those who say she should not have been allowed to play. PLEASE sing a new song. She played. Your opinion changes nothing. And finally, for the upteenth time, it is not the WTA but the ITF that will determine if any further sanctions are to be leveed but no matter what is decided about Serena, she will still be a winner and nothing will change your status in life. Even if she is suspended, you will still be miserable people because you find your joy in someone's life instead of your own.

"Did this creature...??? Why is she still playing??? This woman is no champion. A true champion never shows hate to other people." "Shoud we say "poor serena, she's a victim of racism"??" "This black creature is a LOSER!"
Ummmm, by your definition you are also a racist LOSER, huh?
I'm sure you are someone who comment regularly on her, but this time you've done it under a different name.
Whatever, you sap!!! She holds the title, and you my dear hold what??? LOL

You dumb bi#@#@$h why don't you write the ITF, WTA and ask they why they did not suspend her. Please don't post your vice vicious hate on this board no one cares. Serena handed you kkk members a blow yesterday, I know it's going to take a while for it to sink in you racist head, but give it sometime, you will be ok. The ITF will not suspend their meal ticket, Serena is the STRAW THAT STIRR THE JUICE IN THE WTA, GATARADE, they are not going to throw away their CASH COW. Kunt, like you don't like to see Black women prosper, because you still think this is the 60's. The only @#$%in loser I see on the board is you and your trailer park trash arse. Serena is going to deposit 1.55 million in her bank account when she gets home. How much are you goin to deposit in your, that is if you do have a checking account. Why don't you continue to smoke your CRYSTAL METH. You hate Serena because she is POWERFUL BEYOUND MEASURE. IT'S HER STRENGTH THAT FRIGHTENS HATERS SUCH AS YOURSELF.
get a life, the real loser is only you.
