Busted Racquet - Tennis

What is the rest of the tennis world saying about Andre Agassi's admission that he was a habitual user of crystal meth in 1997? Here's a rundown of the thoughts of some of the biggest names in the game, ranging from the forgiving (Andy Roddick) to the furious (Martina Navratilova):

Roger Federer: "It was a shock when I heard the news. I am disappointed and I hope there are no more such cases in future."

Rafael Nadal: "If the ATP covered for Agassi then I think that's dreadful. If they covered for the player and punished others for doing the same kind of thing then that would seem to me to be a lack of respect for all sportsmen ... Now that he is retired, he comes out and says this? It's a way of senselessly damaging the sport."

Serena Williams: "I don't even know what crystal meth is, so, you know, that's what my reaction to it is ... I haven't read anything about Andre Agassi's book. All I know is I have a book coming out. It's called 'On The Line'". [That's gold. -- ed.]

Venus Williams: "I'm sure his book will sell. But I can't say anything about Andre Agassi's life."

Andy Roddick: "Andre is and always will be my idol. I will judge him on how he has treated me and how he has changed the world for (the) better."

Former coach Nick Bollettieri: "I don't condone what he did - I've made mistakes too, but I've done more good than bad ... Let's look at what Andre has done, he funds a school for 400 kids from the inner-city. I know underneath he's a hell of guy."

U.S. Federation Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez: "It takes a lot of guts and courage to come out and say something that nobody would have really known about. Maybe people can learn from it and not make the same mistakes."

Martina Navratilova: "Shocking. Not as much shock that he did it as shock he lied about it and didn't own up to it. He's up there with Roger Clemens, as far as I'm concerned. He owned up to it (in the book), but it doesn't help now ... Andre lied and got away with it. You can't correct that now. Do you take away a title he wouldn't have won if he had been suspended? He beat some people when he should have been suspended."

How the hell do you not know what crystal meth is...she always dodges questions and acts ignorant and then somehow plugs in her bull [profane] that nobody is gonna buy.

This is getting out of control.
As usual, I like Federer's comments the best: to the point and classy.

Roddick is one of the smartest players on tour, even if it's not readily apparent. He's the most quick-witted player in interviews, which is a sign of intelligence, and he didn't jump the gun here. He kept it into perspective and noted that the drugs only hurt Agassi at that point in his career. It was a performance destroying drug. Mary Joe Fernandez and Nick B are completely on the ball as well. They all realize that the drug only hurt Agassi, gave him his worst year ever, and then somehow he was able to come out of it and get to the top again, personally and professionally. It's a remarkable and inspiring story that I can't wait to read about from the man himself, and frankly, the fact that he used the most horrendous drug out there and somehow overcame it, and can own up to it now even though he didn't have to, makes me respect him even more. He's a great father and husband, one of the biggest humanitarians in sports history, one of the greatest players ever to play the game, and a hell of an interesting and charismatic guy.
Federer is a stiff as usual. Instead of saying anything with any meaning, he just gives out a stock statement. My opinion of him doesn't change, I still respect him as a great player. I already knew he was a conservative square, ala Sampras. He's Sampras 2.0. Nadal is an absolute buffoon here. He jumps the gun without knowing the facts or putting it into perspective. He's an uneducated knuckle-head, albeit one with a friendly disposition. Martina Navratilova gets the prize for biggest moron in the world of tennis. When someone starts firing the way she did here, you know there's something that they're hiding. It's like Spitzer going relentlessly after prostitution in New York City and throwing the book at offenders, while secretly seeing a high class hooker. Or these politicians who spout family values and spit at anyone who smokes a joint, and then one day are caught with their pants down, either with a mistress or with an underaged boy. Or David Letterman, who would wince when Howard Stern would mention sex, but meanwhile was banging half his staff, while Howard Stern who openly talks about sex was always faithful to his wife. I know Martina has done some rotten things in the past, but she'll never admit it.

Agassi will still the most beloved American tennis player. Navratilova is just jealous and to compare him to Clemens, who by the way still has not admitted it, is just probably sour grapes because nobody cares about her. She is the biggest hater in tennis. If you guys happen to catch her "disrespectful" comments about Steffi Graf during the US Open 95 final, you'll see. She's a great tennis player as well, but not really all that tactful when it comes to comments.
And I agree, Federer kept it classy. And to all, he hasn't sinned, cast the first stone.

I'm glad he admitted it - I am eager to read the book as this has a chance of being a true tell-all rather than just another self-glorifying autobiography. Fascinating stuff. And...wow. Every time Serena opens her mouth I am amazed that people cannot see plainly that she is a narcissistic sociopath. That's gotta be the quote of the decade, and it perfectly summarizes her contempt for, and absolute unawareness of, any human being other then herself. Editor put it just right...gold!

I agree with poster #5. Martina sounds like a village idiot for even attempting to defame Andre's legacy.
Everybody makes mistakes in their lives and Andre does a complete 180 and becomes a better person.
    End of story.
Who does Martina think she is to even suggest that Andre should have not earned those trophies?

If it came out that a current player was on meth and lied about it to the ATP, how many people would defend him? But for some reason, Agassi gets a pass just because it happened in the past and you like him? And Serena gets attacked for making a humorous plug for her book instead of buying into the Agassi media game? If Roddick made the same comment, he'd be praised for it. The double standards are revealing.

Also, who in their right mind would even think about reading her BIOGRAPHY. Ha-ha, that is really laughable. Agassi's biography on the other hand, is real, just like Johnny Mac's was.

Andre remains my hero. What he has done for the game and for the lives of those people he's helped and continues to help definitely transcends this lapse in judgment.
People make mistakes, and though he has always been larger than life, Andre is still human. What is most important is that he overcame it and is living proof that it is possible to do so.
His life of fierce competitiveness, rebellion, downward spiral, realization and eventually redemption, is inspiring.
I do not buy the accusations that he is doing it for the money. If there is anything that has always been clear is Andre is not obsessed about nor hungry for money. He has given most of what he has earned to his charitable endeavors. Besides, for the biggest star of tennis,a multi million dollar book deal is not surprising.
The honesty took a lot of courage.Everything is in the line. He made a mistake and is owing up to it. His decision to come clean should be applauded, not scorned.
Rafael Nadal has just proven how immature he is. Damage the sport? Dude, Andre made Tennis popular and he drew in the crowds. He has given more to charity than any athelte ever. This whole Nadal holier-than-thou attitude is disgusting. He is just showing the egoistic brat that he is.
Roddick has my respects. Well said, very sensible assessment of the situation. Navratilova on the other hand is still the same nasty person she was on court. Still bitter, still full of hate. Her claims about the drugs' effect on Andre's titles and winning is laughable. Where was she in 1997? Didn't she realize it was Andre's worst year? She needs to get her facts straight and maybe then the tennis fans might actually have some kind of affection for her; something which has rightfully eluded her through out her career.

Post # 5- anon- I could see from your posts that you are not a Federer, a Sampras or a Nadal fan. That's fine. You are free to choose your own favorite player. But will you please be kind enough not to call them stupid, moron or uneducated. If they were, they would not be where they are now-- FAMOUS PROFESSIONAL TENNIS PLAYERS, without a degree, based on your comments. Maybe they are not as educated as you are; because they chose to be an athlete- and their profession doesn't require them to have a Masters or a Ph.D, or even a B.S or B.A. Degrees. They choose to be professional tennis player and the choice they made exclude other possibilities- to atttend formal schooling and earn the high-sounding degrees. Federer and Nadal expressed their disappointment over this very delicate issue, that concerns their profession- about Andre telling a lie to the ATP authorities. It has put a dent in the Tennis Sport- and that's their concern, because they genuinely care about the sport they love. And everyone or anyone is entitled to express their opinion- educated or not. That do not qualify them to be moron, stupid or uneducated.

Andre took a "relaxing" drug, not a performance enhancing drug. If he hurt anyone, it was himself. When he did take meth, he was at the lowest point of his career. It was easier then to quit. But the guy chose to rise up from the abyss, and rise he did. To his second coming and end up in the tennis books.
His cautionary tale should be taken to heart by would be sport players. Andre tells of the perils of the quest. That he was honest and took the risk that his reputation will be undoubtedly soiled makes me admire him the more.

For those criticizing and hating ON Serena, what the he/ll does SHE have to do with ANDRE using Crystal Meth? Anyway, Serena is worth over $25 plus million dollars, and if her book doesn't sell, OH WELL, she IS worth MILLIONS.
ANDRE is the one who LIED about it to tournament organizers etc., and got away with it. Funny how some of you put SO much emphasis on blasting Serena when it's ANDRE who lied about HIS crystal meth use. Having said that, he's helped a lot of people, and deservea kudos for that. As for him lying about his crystal meth use, that IS a problem....He is human and make a mistake, but He'll ALSO have to deal with that, and he WILL get criticism FOR that...
