What is the rest of the tennis world saying about Andre Agassi's admission that he was a habitual user of crystal meth in 1997? Here's a rundown of the thoughts of some of the biggest names in the game, ranging from the forgiving (Andy Roddick) to the furious (Martina Navratilova):
Roger Federer: "It was a shock when I heard the news. I am disappointed and I hope there are no more such cases in future."
Rafael Nadal: "If the ATP covered for Agassi then I think that's dreadful. If they covered for the player and punished others for doing the same kind of thing then that would seem to me to be a lack of respect for all sportsmen ... Now that he is retired, he comes out and says this? It's a way of senselessly damaging the sport."
Serena Williams: "I don't even know what crystal meth is, so, you know, that's what my reaction to it is ... I haven't read anything about Andre Agassi's book. All I know is I have a book coming out. It's called 'On The Line'". [That's gold. -- ed.]
Venus Williams: "I'm sure his book will sell. But I can't say anything about Andre Agassi's life."
Andy Roddick: "Andre is and always will be my idol. I will judge him on how he has treated me and how he has changed the world for (the) better."
Former coach Nick Bollettieri: "I don't condone what he did - I've made mistakes too, but I've done more good than bad ... Let's look at what Andre has done, he funds a school for 400 kids from the inner-city. I know underneath he's a hell of guy."
U.S. Federation Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez: "It takes a lot of guts and courage to come out and say something that nobody would have really known about. Maybe people can learn from it and not make the same mistakes."
Martina Navratilova: "Shocking. Not as much shock that he did it as shock he lied about it and didn't own up to it. He's up there with Roger Clemens, as far as I'm concerned. He owned up to it (in the book), but it doesn't help now ... Andre lied and got away with it. You can't correct that now. Do you take away a title he wouldn't have won if he had been suspended? He beat some people when he should have been suspended."

As usual, I like Federer's comments the best: to the point and classy.

Federer is a stiff as usual. Instead of saying anything with any meaning, he just gives out a stock statement. My opinion of him doesn't change, I still respect him as a great player. I already knew he was a conservative square, ala Sampras. He's Sampras 2.0. Nadal is an absolute buffoon here. He jumps the gun without knowing the facts or putting it into perspective. He's an uneducated knuckle-head, albeit one with a friendly disposition. Martina Navratilova gets the prize for biggest moron in the world of tennis. When someone starts firing the way she did here, you know there's something that they're hiding. It's like Spitzer going relentlessly after prostitution in New York City and throwing the book at offenders, while secretly seeing a high class hooker. Or these politicians who spout family values and spit at anyone who smokes a joint, and then one day are caught with their pants down, either with a mistress or with an underaged boy. Or David Letterman, who would wince when Howard Stern would mention sex, but meanwhile was banging half his staff, while Howard Stern who openly talks about sex was always faithful to his wife. I know Martina has done some rotten things in the past, but she'll never admit it.

And I agree, Federer kept it classy. And to all, he hasn't sinned, cast the first stone.

Everybody makes mistakes in their lives and Andre does a complete 180 and becomes a better person.
End of story.
Who does Martina think she is to even suggest that Andre should have not earned those trophies?

People make mistakes, and though he has always been larger than life, Andre is still human. What is most important is that he overcame it and is living proof that it is possible to do so.
His life of fierce competitiveness, rebellion, downward spiral, realization and eventually redemption, is inspiring.
I do not buy the accusations that he is doing it for the money. If there is anything that has always been clear is Andre is not obsessed about nor hungry for money. He has given most of what he has earned to his charitable endeavors. Besides, for the biggest star of tennis,a multi million dollar book deal is not surprising.
The honesty took a lot of courage.Everything is in the line. He made a mistake and is owing up to it. His decision to come clean should be applauded, not scorned.
Rafael Nadal has just proven how immature he is. Damage the sport? Dude, Andre made Tennis popular and he drew in the crowds. He has given more to charity than any athelte ever. This whole Nadal holier-than-thou attitude is disgusting. He is just showing the egoistic brat that he is.
Roddick has my respects. Well said, very sensible assessment of the situation. Navratilova on the other hand is still the same nasty person she was on court. Still bitter, still full of hate. Her claims about the drugs' effect on Andre's titles and winning is laughable. Where was she in 1997? Didn't she realize it was Andre's worst year? She needs to get her facts straight and maybe then the tennis fans might actually have some kind of affection for her; something which has rightfully eluded her through out her career.

His cautionary tale should be taken to heart by would be sport players. Andre tells of the perils of the quest. That he was honest and took the risk that his reputation will be undoubtedly soiled makes me admire him the more.

ANDRE is the one who LIED about it to tournament organizers etc., and got away with it. Funny how some of you put SO much emphasis on blasting Serena when it's ANDRE who lied about HIS crystal meth use. Having said that, he's helped a lot of people, and deservea kudos for that. As for him lying about his crystal meth use, that IS a problem....He is human and make a mistake, but He'll ALSO have to deal with that, and he WILL get criticism FOR that...
