Traditional leaders plan ritual animal slaughter at W.Cup

JOHANNESBURG, Oct 23 (Reuters) - South African traditional leaders plan to perform ritual animal slaughters to bless stadiums for the 2010 World Cup tournament ahead of the start of the showcase event next June, they said on Friday.

Zolani Mkiva, chairman of the Makhonya Royal Trust, a grouping responsible for co-ordinating cultural activities, said the tournament, the first to be held in Africa, needed to be blessed in true “African style”.

“We must have a cultural ceremony of some sort, where we are going to slaughter a beast (cow),” said Mkiva.

“We sacrifice the cow for this great achievement and we call on our ancestors to bless, to grace, to ensure that all goes well. It’s all about calling for the divinity to prevail for a fantastic atmosphere.”

South Africa is set to host the World Cup—the world’s most watched sports spectacle—in less than eight months, with the tournament expected to attract about 500,000 foreign tourists.

Mkiva said the Trust has sent letters to the chief executive and chairman of the World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC), proposing traditional ceremonies to be performed at each of the 10 stadiums that are going to be used for the event.

The officials have yet to respond to the request.

“We believe that from the start we’ve got to do things in accordance with our own traditions,” Mkiva said. (Reporting by Alison Raymond, editing by Justin Palmer)

I started a petition to stop it if anybody is interested. Please bear in mind that the way they go about the sacrifice is grossly inhumane. For detail on this, go to: http://thewordwright.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/2010-soccer-world-cup-animal-sacrifice-planned/
For those who can stomach it, there is video footage.

How discusting. HOw about they sacrifice one of their leaders. In america we co not use such a practice and to do this in America, it is punishable by law to use animals in rituals or harm them in any way. I ask they sanction this practice immediately.

this is discusting and sickening to my stomach actually.

What is wrong with you people? Animals have a right to live out their lives just as much as any other being on this earth, why should we as humans make that decision? How important is a tradition, when you're talking about taking the life of another being. For what, meat? Something that is not healthy for us anyway. It is almost 2010, it's time to change the mindset of humankind and become "humanekind" and realize that we do not have the right to make the decision to kill another sentient, living, feeling being.

hey if killing a living breathing animal makes them feel closer to their higher power then so be it, but we as a country (CANADA) should have our rights and beliefs understood and excepted also, and we have to stop bending to the cultures of others, this is canada if yu dont like get out and stay out,I cant even go into a variety store anymore and order a chocolate bar as there is no english speaking person behind the counter, how do these people stand up and pledge alligience to canada when they dont or wont speak a word of english, anyhow raise your cow, cut its throat, but dont expect that here in canada we will except it
    cheers

    34. Posted by janice355 Sun Oct 25 5:18am EDT ....so i suppose u believe that they also kill baby seals....and yes I am aware this isnt about the seal hunt but I just needed to give some info to janice that she wasnt getting from PETA. seals are used for more than their fur ...some info for u below my dear;

There are many uses for seal parts. Some parts are used for edible food products. Some edible products are surimi, burgers, medallions, sausage, pepperoni, salami, tenderloins, prime cuts, and the flippers are sometimes eaten as well. The seal meat is also used for animal feed.

Seal meat is very high in proteins, vitamins and minerals, but lower in fat and cholesterol than any other red meats. There is a powder that is used as an additive, extender and blender in meat products or as a protein supplement

There is also a strong market for the seal oil because it is rich in omega 3 fatty acids and amino acids. The refining of this oil is continuing at Newfoundland processing plants. It offers some real possibilities in the health industry

JAAP.....it's not how I look or I am perseived is not what i was saying....maybe you should have read the entire thing or had thought about what i was saying....but if you don't agree with something than fine thats your opinion, if you find it cruel to animlas that also you opinion and you are welcome to have it, but my point it how you express it......people saying that they willl let women and children die who have aids because they want to slaughter a cow is crazy to me....if you agree that than you are just as crazy as the as the person who said it. Because you think one thing is wrong and cruel doesn't justify some of these horrible comments and vast judgements people are making for an entire group of people....yes let them all die and what we will be better off....what a great way to think and be the better person is what my point is. what a great way to solve an issue.

Competitive team sports stem from the primitive need to subdue others so we can survive ourselves. It is the wedge that we drive between ourselves and others, the root cause of all unhappiness. It’s what Hell is all about.
The ritual killing of animals is exactly the same thing: watching the cow die from our hands makes us feel more alive. I can’t see why the Soccer World Cup would not be a befitting venue!

I am sure that the 10 cows will be killed in a very humane way - the blood will be spilled - and the meat will be eaten - the sacrifice will not do a thing either way - it's just tradition or way of life to these people - countries that do not approve of the ceremony only have to boycott the games - we all have traditions that we follow that others many think are idiotic but tolerate them - we also do things much more barbaric than killing a cow - like the catch and release of sturgeon on the Fraser river B.C. Canada - so when we point our finger at someone - remember that 3 are pointing back - now I'm going out back and kill a couple of chickens that have quit laying eggs - wow - now thats barbaric ehhh

Stop pestering these people. It's a ritual just as the seal hunt is to the western world and northern people. Some body tie up PAMMY and put a tape over her mouth.

Post number 25 from Ckrista just blows me away. "How do these comments make you look any better?"
    Ckrista,
It is not about how it makes you look, that is just so egocentric, it is about the cruelty, and the only thing we know for sure is that turning a blind eye will not make it go away.
You saw the Masaai, good, now look at this to see what will happen in SA. http://video.google.ca/videosearch?hl=en&rlz=1W1IRFC_en&um=1&q=zulu%20wedding%20cow%20sacrifice&ndsp=21&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=iv&start=0#q=cow+sacrifice%2C+africa&hl=en&emb=0
Unfortuantely the poster tries to justify it with lies, including calling this BULL the families only milk cow.
It's the African way, glamorize as much as you want.

The deluge of ethnocentric hypocrisy on this blog shows how smug and condescending we are: of course the spectacle of killing a living being (cow, human, it doesn’t matter) in rituals, wars, or capital punishment is barbaric and primitive. Of course I wouldn’t want a part of it in a football stadium, battlefield, or execution room. But neither would I want to witness it in an abattoir or mechanized poultry farm! The raising of cattle in feed lots and industrialized killing of them for food may be less reprehensible, but only slightly so. Become vegetarians, you hypocrites, or go hunting if you absolutely must have meat!

Come to think of it, killing an animal before a soccer world cup is quite fitting! What are competitive team sports other than a slightly castrated form of war? All the ingredients are there: an enemy, the purpose to defeat him, a “team” to identify and do it with, a “nation” (=fans) to do it for. Who’s primitive is all of us, guys! Lay off the South Africans and think of yourselves!

Um Megan, no Indians don't !Among the rituals and cultural practices that India possess, one of the most unusual practice is the way the Indians pay reverence to the inhabited cows. The Hindus give more priority to their spiritual beliefs than their own lives. For example, in the famine of late 60’s people were seen begging for food whereas the cows were seen passing by them undisturbed. Hindus have certain devotion for cows, they praise them and worship them. They are reactionary to any discrimination against cows. This practice has not come from any religious belief because the early Hindus have not prohibited the eating of beef. The evolution of the cow worshipping has come with the recent development of the Hindu religion. In 200 A.D, the slaughtering of cows and the beef consumption has been made restricted and the prohibition of these has been enforced by 1000 A.D. The cows do not have much contribution to the dairy food of India. The main source of investment for the farmers are the female buffaloes. Zebu calves are also important as oxen comes from bulls and these bulls play an active role in the agricultural system of South East Asia. Indian farmers are highly dependent on their bullocks and so are they very much concerned about all other preparations required for a better production. The cow is considered to be a sacred species because it produces oxen as well as help in farming land. The arrival of the monsoon is always very uncertain and during droughts the cows do not reproduce and stop lactating, and so the law against killing cows and keeping them alive so that they can later produce oxen have brought back the recovery of the agricultural system from the failure of the monsoon. Western cattle farming is very different than that of the Indians. The Bengalese cattle only live by eating the inedible remains of the available crops, whereas in United States, it is found that the livestock takes 91 percent of human consuming food. The Indian cattle produces manures of which 70% is used as fuel for cooking and the rest is returned to the fields as it acts as a good fertilizer. When a cow dies, an Untouchable, a lower ranking caste in India handle it, they sell the leather in factory and cook the meat and eat it despite the prohibition in the Hindu religion. The Indians violate the laws but still worship the cows, as it is a revered animal as far as their culture is concerned. Thus as centuries go by, Hindus keep themselves away from eating beef and now it has become a taboo.
