Police use water cannon to end German soccer riot

FRANKFURT (AP)—Police used a water cannon to overcome rioting soccer fans after a second-division game and detained 23 people. Twenty-seven officers were slightly hurt.

The police reacted when about 500 violent supporters of Hansa Rostock tried to breach a police barrier and threw bottles and firecrackers after their club had lost to visiting St. Pauli 2-0. About 1,500 police were on hand for the game between the clubs whose supporters have a history of animosity.

There were clashes during and after Monday night’s game between rival groups of supporters.

Police had no information on possible injuries.

These small bands of hooligans are trying to spoil the fun for everyone else. They want to run the soccer show all by themselves!

German-Swiss animosity can be traced back to the evolution of european cheese. Apparently the germans saw themselves as above the swiss because they had solid hole free cheese, while the swiss struggled to get across to their neighbours how these holes were intentional and improved the cheese as oppose to being due to their poor cheese making capabilities. Thus leading to decades of violence and tension which shows no sign of halting any time soon.

Unfortunately the most popular sport in the world is still plagued by these hooligans, but on most occasions the police look to rile the fans up as much as possible.

what is this fuss all about. the German fans should save the energy for the world cup next year. they will need it once Germany is knocked out early from the tournament possibly by the Swiss whose under 17 team today beat Germany 4-3 at the Fifa Under 17 world cup in Nigeria. Now that is real business.

Are you trying to say that all supporters from the great city of Rostock are neo-nazi. Are you crazy it is like saying every supporter of St. Pauli are whores because it is the red light district of Hamburg. Get your facts right and quit being so racist towards the east.

the St. Pauli-Rostock game is a little WW2: liberals vs neo-nazis. Clashes were expected
Fortunately the 'good guys' won. Party at the Reeperbahn.
