- Giuliano Razzoli is the closest thing Italy has to Alberto Tomba these days. The connection is that Razzoli is a slalom specialist, like Tomba, and he comes from the same central region as the three-time Olympic gold medalist _ Emilia Romagna _ whereas most of Italy's skiers traditionally hail from the German-speaking Alto Adige region. Thus many more Italian fans can identify with Razzoli, who won his first World Cup race at a night slalom in Zagreb, Croatia, last month. Tomba was on hand for the occasion and lifted Razzoli onto his shoulders to celebrate.
- The 25-year-old Razzoli also placed third in Kitzbuehel, Austria, in the penultimate slalom before the games. In the last race before heading to Vancouver, he led the opening run in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, but straddled a gate in his second trip down.
