Covered outdoor skating rink in downtown Vancouver has been upgraded
VANCOUVER - A covered outdoor skating rink in downtown Vancouver has been upgraded for the 2010 Olympics and is now open to the public.
The rink at Robson Square opened 30 years ago, but has been closed to the public since 2000. It's now had $2 million worth of upgrades, creating a larger ice surface and other improvements.
Today's official opening included a performance by Canadian Olympic figure skater and world champion Jeffrey Buttle.
The rink will be open for free skating now and during the Olympics, and sponsor General Electric, which helped pay for the upgrades, also plans to stage other public events during the Games.
Canadian gold medal speed skater Catriona Le May Doan says she's always loved visiting outdoor rinks, and she'll be sure to bring her children to skate there before the Games.
